Thief Electrocuted While Stealing Power to Shock Fish in Community Pond
Picture from responders. A man known for theft and petty crimes in his local community met a tragic end when he was electrocuted while attempting to illegally siphon electricity to shock fish in a community pond in Lopburi. At approximately 19:30 on 17 March, Pol. Lt. Jeerawat Phutaperd, an investigator from Mueang Lopburi Police Station, received a report from a concerned citizen about a body found face-down near a pond behind Naresuan 11 Alley, Moo 1, Khao Sam Yod Subdistrict. Police and rescue teams had to walk 300 metres to the site, where they discovered the deceased man lying face-down with his head partially submerged in the pond. A cable was draped beneath his body, prompting officers to cut the power supply before recovering the remains for examination. The victim was found clutching a cable in one hand, with a pair of pliers still in his grip. His right hand showed burn marks from electrocution. Nearby, police found a red Honda motorbike equipped with tools commonly used for electrofishing. The man was later identified as Mr. Benjaphon, 44, a local labourer who had been living with a friend who had taken pity on him. According to residents, he had a long history of theft and substance abuse, making him widely disliked in the community. Rtd. Lt. Preecha Chaloeyboon, 67, who discovered the body, stated that he had gone out to buy groceries for his grandchildren when he spotted the deceased in the water. Recognising the man, he immediately informed the community leader. Police investigations revealed that during the night, Mr. Benjaphon had climbed into a private residence to illegally connect an electrical cable, running it to the community pond to stun fish. However, he reportedly made a fatal mistake while handling the wires, resulting in a fatal electric shock. Authorities have sent the body to Phra Narai Hospital for initial examination before transferring it to the Institute of Forensic Medicine to determine the exact cause of death. -- 2025-03-18 -
