What would be your action if the person behind said "no, I'm not ok with that"? Would you go ahead and recline anyway?

what a stupid non-common sense idea ...   reclining seats are part of how the airline operates.

You buy a ticket, get a seat and it can recline.   Now ....   a person wanting to recline should politely ask the person behind if they are ok with that,  also,  don't recline at meal times and respect others,

maybe you don't respect others  ....    you sound like you don't.

I seen many people where they don't take into account the person behind them

Once fixed shell seats are in place on every plane problem resolved

What is a fixed shell seat?

The fixed shell seat is designed so that the seat reclines forward and down within the fixed space of the seat, instead of back into the space of the seat behind.

I had an enormous Nigerian woman plonk down next to me on a flight from Doha, she was so fat she had trouble getting to the seat in the middle of 4. All the armrests were up and the rest of us had less room, never seen an arse as big as hers and she was sweating like a pig. Thank God it was only 6 hours and no longer.

I disagree and there are more and more airlines now adopting fixed shell seats to so recliner stealing space is no longer an issue

An ideal solution - which airlines are allowing this in long haul economy ?

I travel a lot and I've never seen this (not saying it doesn't exist though)

No, they are not stealing anything...  when a seat reclines, thats their right to do so.

You thinking thats 'your space' does not make it so.

It seems that the idea of flying brings out the worst attitudes in some....    Its just a flight, get over it, its not a big deal if you are not the sort of person to turn every issue in to a big deal.

If that person behind also reclines, then they have pinched back their missing space. And so on, and so on. Everyone is happy and reclining comfortably. Then there should be a loud hailer announcement or three blasts on an air horn to notify that a meal will be served in 5 minutes and everyone puts their seats back up.

and look, I agree it's a big problem,    thankfully I've never had a issue with fat passengers sitting next to me.

maybe plane builders should re-construct the internal seating to put fat people in a new larger seated row with an extra cost and weight safety distribution obviously.

errrr, perhaps they don't want you to recline? Why bother asking if you are so certain that they won't object. If they DID object, what would you do? Recline anyway?

I don't ask...  but I check behind that nothing is on the tray table, get their attention and indicate that I'm going to recline....

... No one has ever objected.

When someone does the same and treats me with the same curtesy when reclining their seat in front of me, I say thanks....

Most people are good travellers - it seems a few incredibly miserable misers here could turn someone else's flight into an awkward encounter with their stinky attitudes.

Thats the way this thread is going... I'm surprised people haven't already suggested that fat people are shot before boarding and babies and children drugged to unconsciousness...

.... Just so the boomers and sit there and drink as much alcohol as they can in peace and relative comfort...

that's a bit excessive Richard don't you think ....   :burp:

Look ....  fat people should be put in a different row, and made to pay extra ...   reclining a seat is fine,  just ask the person behind. Or let them know.

Its about 'letting them know you are going to recline' and showing some curtesy instead of slamming the seat back, which is quite rude IMO... and can also damage things or knock a drink off etc...

Its just basic manners... and its basic manners of the person behind to be tolerant of that.

If the person in front of me reclines their seat, I'll just recline mine....     If the person behind objects then we'd have a problem, but I've never faced such an issue yet and I fly a lot.

Discussions such as this usually stem from USA news where it appears that some travellers are so 'stuck into their own rights' that the don't live in a reality where normal reason exists.

just do what they do in America ...  get up and punch the person behind you for saying NO ...  :vampire:

If someone is that fat, they already know they can't fit in a seat....

They'll either book business or just not flight - I've seen large people flying, I've sat next to people who are large and were 'touching' shoulders etc...  but thats part of flying....

IF someone is such a grumpy miserable ayhole of a passenger they can't stand fat people, maybe its them who should look at taking measures not to be exposed...  i.e. get themselves a business class ticket and they're away from everyone.

Weight safety distribution is a ridiculous myth someone made up - a few obese passagers make no difference when considering all the cargo etc...   that idea is just someone really over-egging their argument.

As far a 're-construct internal seating' is concerned - is that what Premium Economy is ????

Perhaps Airlines should instead offer...    'skinny seats' - narrower, less leg room etc... for those who are less than 160cm and less than 50 kgs etc ???...

... Where do we draw the line ?

Strange, because thats only been possible for the last year or two after the train through Laos was completed.  Maybe he went as far as China 20 years ago, but not Thailand.

I've actually done the whole trip, London to Singapore, but on different trips, not all at once.  The longest I did in one trip was Europe to Beijing.

From memory i think he got to Cambodia before he caught a bus,but then he could have gone to Poipet,Aranypratet then Bkk by train.

China to Vietnam to Cambodia perhaps?

You could always go on a CRASH-BIG-MAC diet and UP YOUR GAME....if you like.

If you can beat them, then just join them.

Big mac has like 580 calories.... surely can eat a few everyday before it becomes a concern.

9 or 10, maybe.

But do not overdo it.

are you insinuating that won't work?

You don't need permission or to be polite what so ever, to recline your seat on an airplane.

It's just nonsense.

Do you put your hand up to go to the toilet as well.

Had an enourmous Russian plonk himself down next to me once on a flight. Rolls of fat spilt over the divide and engulfed me, like I was drowning. Ended up having to move.

I realise there is another topic about plane seats right now. But I am only interested in one thing, as someone who has never had a problem with fat people taking up part of my seat, I just want to know what you would do if you were on a flight for about 12 hour's and a very fat person was taking up a part of your seat especially if you were a 6ft tall person weighing around 78 Ks like me.

What exactly does "taking up part of my seat " mean ?  I mean how far would you be prepared to go ? Sounds a bit weird to me.

Personally the thought of being anywhere near obese people makes me want to puke

alcoholics seldom worry about things like that, they normally just "let it go"

No reason why the prices could not be based on BMI or some similar formula. Plus those who are found to have lied on their ticket application could be shamed and charged an additional fee at the airport weigh-in

Your last paragraph, I'm exactly the same, even being next to a guy with a lot of facial hair or tattoo's makes me want to puke, so I just move away. Your first sentence, do you really not know??
