An American woman's ill-considered social media post involving a wombat joey has stirred a frenzy in Australia, ultimately sending her fleeing to Thailand amidst a whirlwind of backlash. The incident, initially shared on TikTok by the woman, Samantha Strable, showcased her attempting to capture a wombat joey, sparking immediate outrage from Australian wildlife enthusiasts and beyond.

In the video, Strable's boyfriend, Louis Sixt, can be seen laughing as the mother wombat frantically chased after them, accentuating the distress of the mother in the encounter. Renowned Melbourne influencer Anthony Voulgaris sharply criticised Strable in front of his half a million followers, igniting a fervent online discourse. He labeled their actions as disdainful and reiterated the importance of respecting wildlife, exclaiming, "This isn't a mistake. You're being a terrible person."

The viral video has prompted thousands of comments, with many viewers expressing empathy for the distressed wombat. Others, however, argue that while the handling of wildlife was improper, the torrent of abuse Strable encountered was disproportionate. Amidst the uproar, Strable maintains her innocence, insisting the joey was unharmed and promptly returned to its mother.

This incident continues to fuel discussions about wildlife preservation and social media's power to ignite social outrage. As Strable grapples with the fallouts of her actions, the event reminds global audiences of the ongoing challenges in balancing human curiosity with the respect and protection of wildlife, reported The Thaiger.

Influencer? Who do these people influence? Coming to Thailand? Try taking a monkey away from its mother. That would make a very interesting video. Meanwhile hundreds of men, women and children are being killed every day and people are getting their arses in their hands about a wombat.

Injustice elsewhere does not  excuse inappropriate cruelty  in Australia.

Your finger pointing ignores  tthe fact that the  people who are most upset over an overt act of cruelty to a young animal are also the people who lead the way on humanitarian activities.

Australia is a civilized nation subject to law. The American  woman takes delight in  publishing photos of herself with various animals killed  for trophies. She knew what she did was wrong and she intentionally tormented the animal for monetary gain. An Australian may be powerless to stop illegal acts in far off  sovereign nations, but they can stop an ignorant American from  flouting Australian  laws for her personal profit.

Your post demonstrates you know nothing about Australia, a common occurrence with Americans.

Kangaroos and wallabies compete for pasture and water with sheep and cattle. They also damage fences.

They are capable of suspending gestation for years during droughts. When the drought breaks, their populations explode. No risk of them becoming extinct.

Culled kangaroos are not wasted. They go into pet food. Kangaroo fur is the most durable in the world.

OTOH, the northern hairy-nosed wombat is critically endangered, and the southern version is at risk.

I doubt your airhead influencer knew that. Or you, for that matter.

Gee grumpy.

she cuddled a wombat. Talk about defensive. Having a bad day?

you murder millions of kangaroos.

i think if you asked the kangaroo, they would prefer a cuddle.

A huge difference between a cuddle and a killing.

And I think you mean kangaroo leather not fur.

Sounds like you have a thing for sheep which I hear is quite common down under?

As a Brit I am happy to educate my conviction cousins.

The village idiot aka influencer took a young wombat from its mother for a photo op.

I'll bet when you tuck into your lamb chops, steak, or pork, you don't think you are sponsoring murder. Explain the difference to me.

No, I don't mean kangaroo leather, which is no more durable than pigskin or cowhide. I mean kangaroo fur, which is the most dense of any.

The supreme test of any blade for sharpness is whether it can shave kangaroo fur.

I have no convict ancestry.

As an Aussie, I am happy to educate toffee-nosed prats who don't seem to realize the British Empire faded into history after WWII.

Ok if I have to.

Lamb, cows and pork are raised in Australia by farmers and are killed humanely and used for human consumption.

Kangaroos are a wild animals and only 3% is used for food.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Who is your king?

Who is your head of state?

Whose head is on all your coins?

What language do you speak?

You would all be running around with spears trying to catch kangaroos if it wasn’t for us.

All of it is used for pet food.

99% of kangaroos are shot by professional shooters who are expert marksmen. That's just as humane as being herded into an abbattoir.
