Thai Minister Stands Firm Amid Criticism on Air Pollution Fight

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has hit back at critics, defending Thailand’s international efforts to tackle PM2.5 air pollution. Facing a no-confidence debate, Maris assured that Thailand is not just sitting back and letting the haze roll in from neighbouring ASEAN nations.

Thailand's "Blue Sky Strategy" sees it teaming up with Laos and Myanmar to combat cross-border haze. This collaboration includes zoning, emergency alerts, and haze monitoring.

And it's not just about regional ties: heavy hitters like Japan, South Korea, and the US are involved too! There’s even a Joint Task Force meeting coming up to expand alliances.

Bilateral projects are also steaming ahead. Thai and Lao teams are working hand in hand on training and tech for better haze control.

Plus, a pending agreement with Cambodia promises a hotline for hotspot data and firefighting coordination. The message is clear: Thailand's in it to win it against air pollution.

Thai Gov can't control the burns happening WITHIN Thailand, yet talk about surrounding countries.  Appalling ...
Fix the problem in Thailand before tackling the surrounding countries.  Start with CP in Thailand!

Totally agree with the last paragraph.

But CP seems untouchable.

I live on the Laos border and experience the blow over but and this is a big BUT, 95% of polution here and everywhere I travel is local.  Many, poster here included, seem think there is nothing that can be done in Thailand because Thailand can't control their neighbors which is so far from reality.

Just fixing polution at the local village level has a huge impact on the quality of air.  Keep it simple and focus on village heads to fix the issue is the solution.  Our village did it this year with incredible results.  It was confrontational and almost violent trying to enforce because burning has always been accepted.  Now that we are at the tail end of it and no more speaches at meetings for a 4-5 weeks and it is a little worse but I can adjust to the bad periods that only last a few hours in most cases.

Here is a small satellite picture of the fires in Thailand and neighboring Myanmar.

😞 Edit : the picture following my post is much better and shows the extent of the fires not only in surrounding countries BUT in Thailand as well. It sickens me that I set up a life here but I still love the country and the normal people.

Politicians can do one.

This evidence is undeniable and yet, this guys insists that everything is being done. I wonder if PP are allowed to display such images in the censure debate. If so, it would shut this guy up in his tracks. This government is useless.

What are you seeing that I'm not? Thailand is MUCH better than its neighbors. Yes? Compared to 20 years ago Thailand has improved but now it needs to forget about other countries because it will have little impact on local polution.  Look at the image you replied to and you will notice the the polution isn't crossing borders.  We might be saying the same thing 🙂

Yet more tomfoolery I see. After visiting Thailand for over 30 years as a tourist nothing has ever changed.

I'm so happy to be back in clean, green, polite Japan.

"Not my fault.  Fault of other countries. Thailand 100% pure as white cloth." <sound of can being kicked down the road>
