A week after the collapse of a new government building in Chatuchak, authorities have announced that a definitive cause remains elusive, with investigations poised to extend for several months.

At the centre of the ongoing probe is the structural engineering of the building, which requires comprehensive examination before any conclusions are drawn.

Following a meeting at the Ministry of the Interior on 4 April, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that while preliminary assessments have begun, immediate conclusions are currently impossible due to the ongoing rescue operations.

Engineers must further analyse the design structure, particularly concerning its unique elevator placement that deviates from conventional mid-building positioning. This unusual design could contribute to structural instability.

Mr Anutin emphasised the need for a detailed probe into various engineering safety factors, including resistance to shear and torsion forces, all of which will necessitate meticulous calculations over the coming months.

On another note, he addressed the need for fairer compensation for victims. Current legal frameworks prescribe inadequate compensation—29,000 baht for fatalities and 4,000 baht for injuries. Mr Anutin directed officials to identify more reasonable support mechanisms, given the severity of the incident.

Associate Professor Dr Thanet Veerasiri, president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, reinforced the complexity of the task ahead. He stressed that collecting intact material samples remains challenging amidst ongoing rescue efforts, further challenging the timeline for conclusive findings.

Or years, depending on the "statute of limitations" for engineering disasters causing death. It'll give em plenty of time to get the abacus warmed up and find someone capable of using it.

Question: are the same Chinese companies involved in the building collapse also involved in building Thailand's high speed railway?

YES  and laos rail as well

Thanks for the info. I feared that would be the case. What would be the result of a fast high speed train running along fake steel rails and components? I can guess.

I'm more concerned about the safety of the thousands of high rises that are being left to those with vested interests to check if they're safe!

Drag their feet for months and when everyone's forgotten about it.. don't mention it again.

Chinese guys caught removing paperwork from the site means things have to hidden..

dodgy dealings, short-cuts, material cost cutting, things signed off that shouldn't be etc etc..

The standard compensation equivalent of 3 months wages for a death and 10 days wages for injuries is a joke.

The Chinese company needs time to bribe everyone involved:  to implement a complete coverup; and for the public to have forgotten about the earthquake. Lets not forget the need for further investigation  that may take years. Then Anutin will announce that there is no proof of their responsibility.

(This unusual design could contribute to structural instability. )    they (the goverment) aproved the design by committee. this is all a cover up all this can be modelled on a pc not in months but days total BS

It has been policy for decades to have the central lift system as stability for the entire building...somebody changed that design and was approved by government...now they say it will take several months to access that design in which all public scrutiny will have diminished and all evidence will be cleared...and all charges dropped as families grieve their losses of loved ones and all compensation is limited  and charges are dropped...

Yes agree cover up comming,  the design was just part of the collapse still questions on the materials used, corruption,  collusion but will all be covered up

I would expect years, if ever

Yes, a funnel into the silence. They first have to find all stakeholders with controversial material, documents and nformation. Then these stakeholders need to be approached, offering them loads of money and other benefits to keep their mouth shut or tell a different story.

As soon as done, they follow the manuscript for public and anti-corruption committee communication, with the aim to prove that nothing was exceptional, it was just a low frequency earth quake wave, putting the structure in a natural swing mode, and since it was under construction, reinforcements were still missing, so the construction collapsed.  Job done.

Gone will be the stories of low steel quality, violation against safety guidelines, dubious Chinese subcontractors, etc.

What almost surprises me most is the total lack of these discussions in Thai opinion, or even a revolt against politicians. It feels like Thai always believe these twisting stories of higher officials.

What more can I add. Worst still in Thailand this is not unbelievable. In most developed western countries it would be unbelievable! If I were a lawyer in a civilised country where law is obeyed, I would rest my case against the defendants  with this evidence and let the 12 members of the jury decide the verdict. Nothing more to add to convince them.

I'm sure an assembly of young ladies from local 7-11s could be employed to use their calculators for the simpler sums.

Months to investigate? For people to forget, more like. Reeks of a cover-up. The 23rd (or 24th, depending on which side of the divide one is on) Chinese 'province' has to tow the Party-line. Can't upset the mainland masters, right?
