Because the prison workers must get paid first so o they can buy the the ticket to an inflated price.

IDC staff do not have them available at all, never mind "inflated prices".

As the Thai obsession with "overstay" continues unabated.

No different from the overstay procedures obsession in your own country, it is not something peculiar to Thailand.

Why not just stamp her passport and stick here on the plane with a 10 year ban? let somebody else deal with her,

They'll do that after they get the overstay money.

A 45-year-old British woman has been arrested and detained, at Phuket International Airport after authorities discovered she had overstayed her permitted entry by  207 days, immigration officials confirmed on 7 April.

The arrest took place at approximately 11:30 by immigration officers at the airport’s international terminal. The woman, whose identity has not yet been released by authorities, was preparing to depart the country when officers flagged her passport and identified the significant overstay.

Immigration officials stated that the woman had been in breach of Thailand’s immigration laws, having remained in the kingdom well beyond the period permitted.

It remains unclear why she overstayed or whether she had made any attempts to report her status or rectify the issue with immigration authorities prior to her arrest.

Why has her name not been released yet if she's guilty? I reckon her name would tell us a lot.

Like what ??? Her name ?

Or do you mean that if she has a name such as Makena Adebowale instead of Sarah Jones she may have been treated differently ??

I was thinking of her origins, having a British passport does not male her British

Nah, she has a British Passport, stick her on a plane to the USA and let those friendly 'Homeland' border weirdos have at her..

Just another reason, judging from the photo, why I will not be moving to Phuket.

I cannot believe it....also...that she did not even take the forethought to dress up for her return flight to the UK.

Dunno why Phuket is in the news so much. Seems to be turning into a Pattaya of sorts. Overcrowded, cheap downmarket tourists, lots of scams and violence and deaths. Haven't been there since Covid - twice in the 'sandbox' and once on holiday - it was great at that time. Very few people there. The few hotels and restaurants that were open were very good too.

Maybe she didn't have the 20K baht fine.  If they started waiving that, more of them would overstay and just turn up at the airport when they decided on their own that it was time to leave.

That's good 20k thb fine..not like the never ending Cambodia System..I paid $3,300 at the airport not long ago for about a year overstay. Lot's of farangs stuck there can't afford to leave and the bill going up and up.

If she doesn't have any money for the flight back , Iuntil she have  I would  recommend the IDC until she has some.

She was at the airport ready to fly out.

fingerprints dont change.

Of course - neither does her birthdate - unless...... she gets the new PP from Kao San Road (but fingerprints stay the same)

Yawn… in every thread where a non-White person of ‘Western’ nationality is the subject we have the same comments…

She has a British Passport & has likely lived there longer than I have, and, was probably born there, possibly generations have been Brits…. Where is the line ?

My Son, also British, has never lived there !

It does not look like she was starving recently...

It you can't do de time den dont do de crime!

I hope she likes fish head soup and rice because that going to be on the menu for a long time...

She may even lose some weight!

Hopefully she is rescued by a Nigerian Prince, once she sends him a few hundred pounds to release his vast fortune!🤪😎🤪

Well... if she was arrested before the immigration counter, even if she had 20k, the rules of surrendering to border immigration would not apply and she would be treated like if she was picked up anywhere on the street in the middle of Thailand.

That's something that was discussed many times before. When on overstay, keep low profile and get to the immigration counter, it's only after that, that the lower penalty rules come into play.

Was she fired from her job in the UK for being absent for too long.

Or was she a UK federal worker working from home and told she had to actually, physically report to the office with her past weeks work history.

Or just independently wealthy or on the dole.

Yes, Im well aware she broke the law, to detain her seems pointless,

So let's say they make each day in IDC valued at 200 baht a day as the pre payment incarceration penalty to be used to getv her to the 20k fine payment....she'll be locked up for 100 days. However et's just say 100 baht a day.....then she will have spent almost as many days locked away as her overstay.....then a 10 year ban.....

Maybe.  Or maybe she has an ATM card, or relatives that can Western Union her the funds.  If they just gave up and let her through, they'd be denying her the opportunity to be creative in raising her fine.  And set a poor precedent.

Now she will have to find the B20,000 and the money for a return ticket (only a one way passage if being deported) back home.

Exactly right….what’s the reason to detain her now?….Thai authorities not great decision makers
