Actually you also removed a post that said I was recognisable and the poster's wife agreed - that is not a troll Rimmer. From memory I think it was Andrew Dwyer who said that.

Not me, i do think that you are recognisable.

But if you have already set the wheels in motion for countersigning it will do no harm.

To the kind and helpful folk who are setting my paranoid mind at rest - thank you so much. FWIW as my UK- debit card expires in June my wife and I have decided to go for a renewal in May, in 3 weeks time, before the debit card expires. They won't post the new one here - it will go to my daughter but she won't be able to bring it until December and while I realise I only need the card number and the 3 digit number on the back going in May ties in with Google saying apply 9 months before expiry.

Not wishing it on myself but 10 years from now I might well be long gone so going early and losing 9 months is no problem realistically.

So we will run with the old passport and forget the new pics issue thanks to you guys!

i think i did my photo online... certainly the uk gov site is escellent

Highly unlikely that you were allowed to provide digital mugshots if you renewed from Thailand, I would have thought. The official guidance states: "You need 2 identical printed photos if you are applying for a passport using a paper form."

Yes, you would have needed to have something drastic to affect your facial appearance (e.g. dyeing your hair a lurid shade of green) as to necessitate formal certification of new mugshots.

My hair has morphed into a lurid shade of grey over the past few years. I think facial recognition can ignore top and facial hair, it goes off dimensions between various parts of the face.

You still need the new pics of course, just no need for countersigning.

Regarding a child's first UK passport. It lasts for 5 years, so photo taken when the baby is one month old, and must be used til kid is 5, so appearance will have changed considerably needing a countersigned photo at 5, Another 5 year one takes them to 10, another for 10-15. Then a ten year cannot be issued until child is 16, so what happens to the 15-16 year? Crazy.

I hadn't thought about that. I just renewed by son's passport which is valid until January 2030.  He'll be 15 when we renew it. Presumably he just gets another 5-year passport!

No agents, no professional pictures, no counter signatories and no UK visit required.

This is recent information as of two months ago.

I applied online with the HMPO website while in Thailand.

Uploaded my own telephone pics which were checked and accepted by the website.

Paid with my UK credit card.

Sent my old passport to HMPO from Thailand with priority EMS at post office.

Used my sister's UK address for delivery.

When my sister received my new passport, she posted to Thailand with Royal Mail tracked/signature/airmail service.

From online application to receipt of new passport in Thailand took six weeks.

Not the correct way, as you shouldn't be in Thailand without a passport.

It currently takes less than 6 weeks to renew the correct way, so no time advantage and a lot more risk, doing it online!

Then I can toddle off to VFS and give them the papers.

Surely VFS will verify who you are when you visit them to apply for renewal, no need to get a counter signatory? That's their job isn't it when they meet you face to face?

VFS does not replace the need for a countersignature when it's actually required. They are mainly a mailbox.  There is no actual requirement for you to meet them face to face.

Correct. Although they are supposed to check the documentation before forwarding it to the UK.  I'd like to think that if they compare the new photo with the old passport photo and it has significantly changed they will tell the applicant, before sending everything off.

That's what I did. Got the photos from a small shop in Mae Hia (floor above Rimping) for 150 THB. The agencies have all the forms, do all the photocopying,

I assume this is in Chiang Mai?? Any similar service that works for countersigned photos near VFS in Bangkok if VFS cannot do it themselves!?

I've had two 10 year passport renewals in Thailand. Never had to deal with countersigned photos. I assume all agencies offer the same service as the application has to go through the same processes.

Tip: Make sure you get passport photos from a shop that does them all the time (ask for recommendations). You hear a lot of stories where the new photos are rejected for incorrect composition, background shade, wrong size, and even slight under or over exposure.
