Installing new rain gutter - any thoughts on this idea .

So my wife’s elderly widowed relative lives in her small bungalow type house that has a tiled roof. Around the tiled roof runs an old rusting metal rain gutter , that has numerous leaks. And those leaks go on to the outside concrete paths and are making floor surface slippy and dangerous to walk on. So my dear wife has asked me if I can take down the old metal rusting rain gutter, and replace it with some thing new. I have no problem in personally carrying out the rain gutter replacement work.

I don’t want to spend very much money replacing the old metal rusting rain gutter, and I came across the past comment shown below ( thanks pib )

Just go get some large diameter blue PVC pipe, around 6 inches in diameter, cut it in half "long ways" and then you have two pieces of gutter that won't rust, lasts forever. Repeat procedure until you have enough gutter to go around the house...the longer the pipe the less joints you have to glue together. Use long screws to secure the pipe to the roof edge. Also use PVC pipe for downspouts. My mother-in-law's neighbor recently did this. I've seen other houses out in the provinces do this to partially put gutters around the house/just put it on problem spots...they don't even joint the half pieces with glue as they just over lap one pipe half onto the other with a slight slant of the entire pipe section....kinda like how concrete roof shingles overlap each other. PVC pipe used as gutter may not be aesthetically appealing to most, but it's definitely practical and long lasting.

So I’m wondering if any one has tried the blue PVC water pipe method , as a rain gutter .

Any thoughts  or suggestions - very welcome .

Thanks 🙏 .

Have you investigated PVC guttering, saves all the cutting etc of PVC pipe and price may not be much difference.

Just a thought, however the PVC idea would work without too many problems.

I agree with  Artisi. The PVC gutters would be a lot easier. The only problem I see with the pipe is if just screwed to the soffit, over time they might sag.

And the soffit rots,

I am not sure PVC pipe would have UV stabilizers to prevent breakdown from solar radiation, it is usually buried.

PVC gutters may be a safer bet, as the manufacturers would probably have a warranty in place.

Have to agree with the other posters. We put PVC guttering (brown not white but it is cheaper) around our older house and a new garage. It is a much better look than the old metal gutter and what the blue pipe would look like. If that does not matter to you okay and do it the dodgy Thai way with the blue pipe.

Unfortunately the do not have the aluminium gutters here.

None of the blue pipe has UV stabilisation so if you use the thinner pipe it will become brittle and easily damaged quickly the thicker pipe will also deteriorate so it would be better last longer and eventually be cheaper to use actual PVC gutter

Not at cheap as the plastic gutters, but you can get galvanized, stainless and (I think) aluminum gutters roll-formed to length, at site. The only seams are at the corners and downspouts.

If you are going to do the work yourself anyway, unless you are sure they are rusted out, and not just leaking, the first thing you should do is pressure-wash out the old gutters and inspect them. It might just be seams leaking of even overflowing.
