You mentioned "....Thais expect, as a Westerner, that I have a university degree from Europe?"

You mention "...from Europe". Are you serious on that point?

Plenty of other countries where you can attend classes / study online for a bachelor degree.

What subject would you study for your bachelor degree?

(Regardless of location, online / in classroom study.)

But keep in mind that teaching employment (especially English) in Thailand is a very mixed picture. You mention teach English, are you fully up to date with current attitudes / qualifications which schools look for?

There's websites which might be worth looking at re that question which can put you in touch with current teachers.

Regardless, there's still schools which aren't serious about teacher qualifications and will accept any document which appears to be somehow linked.

A question for you: Would you personally employ a foreigner who has a bachelor degree (in any subject) gained online for a position to teach English?

Another question: If you are a foreign parent would you accept a foreigner to teach your kids English (all skills) who just has a degree in any subject gained online*? And if the degree is not in the area of English development, same question, 'would you accept that foreigner as capable of teaching your kids English (all skills)?

(* Philippines doesn't have a good reputation for online

degrees. E.g. Who completed the assignments etc? Does the

uni offering the online Bachelor degree give assignments then

provide the student with answers to the assignments?)

Same question  If you are a foreign parent would you accept a foreigner to teach your kids English but I add...'and the foreigner has not attended any form of study specific to teaching English?

Perhaps others more up to date in this area might like to add their thoughts / experiences.

Many Filipinos teach English in Thailand. They have a bachelor’s degree from the Philippines, and nobody minds not the parents, nor the Thai schools. So why should my Filipino degree be a problem? Yes I originally considered doing an online bachelors in the Czech Republic but the Philippines is cheaper

philipinos have strong accents that many thai parents dont like. Many of them know diddlysquat about english but still get jobs. thank you for revealing your nationality... russians and czechs also have strong accents and it is far from being your native language. how would you feel paying for someone who has a strong accent and likely is not that great at english?

You're very racist and make angry negative comments. 🙄

Says the guy always bitching and moaning about other foreigners, and then attacks them when he gets corrected.  🤦‍♂️

This would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

This is very funny, the keyboard warrior appears, the guy I'm talking about, the guy who makes strange comments to nearly every thread but I never interact, I simply scroll down, some here are unable.

I only interact with you after I receive one of your antagonizing, hostile comments.

I see many foreigners here in Pattaya, acting inappropriately, I make comment about this inappropriate behaviour.

You never see these disrespectful foreigners, you are always sat alone in your 30m² apartment day in, day out, attacking members from your warrior keyboard.

Their lives aren't miserable per se, they just have mental problems and think that moving to Thailand can solve them.  Unfortunately, they tend to bring their problems with them and the novelty wears off after a while.  Then, they generally have to troll other people in order to chase that feeling of specialness that they got when they first arrived.

Many kind of have their self-esteem attached to their perception of Thailand.  They view Thailand and Thai people as being superior, and they are then able to feel superior by extension through being in Thailand and claiming to be "more Thai" than other forefingers.

In terms of behaviour, this means they end up hating other foreigners whilst claiming that all Thais are perfect.  They'll even go as far as saying that if a foreigner does something negative, but a Thai does the same, the foreigner is bad for doing it, while it is fine for the Thai to do the same.

Total delusion.

The real kicker, is that they will claim to be happy, when their behaviour suggest the complete opposite.

@MalcolmB, you are being attacked by this guy. Are you just going to take that?

University of Hong Kong is TOPS....in the area.

But, you gotta be....SMART to get in....for sure....

Hello, I want to work as a foreign language teacher in Thailand, and for that, I need a bachelor’s degree, which I don’t have.

HELLO....

Please choose a different field of work.

Students here do NOT need teachers who were not dedicated enough to academics to get their degree...EVEN BEFORE they thought of teaching in Thailand.

Why do you think you might be qualified to teach ESL?

Are you prepared to teach for a pittance?

How many languages do you speak?

Do you know, first hand, the challenges and the strategies of learning an L2, L3, for example?

Just asking.....

From what I understand, the Filipinos are paid less than the teachers from NES countries.

Not just a matter of pay.

It's a matter of excellence.

For example:

HKU requires at TOEFL score of at least 580 to even be considered for a degree program.

But, this must be the minimum, since HKU is a very competitive and selective university.

I would say that if one were to teach in Thailand, then this might require a higher level of intelligence.

If I were planning to teach English in Thailand to ESL students, then I would want to, first, do some research with....

Averil COXhead.

image.png.f3abaed53bf33d73a673d685ec24754a.png

She is one of the most wellknown researchers in her field.

One does not gain the required skills to teach ESL...just by completing a BA or an MA.

One must be smart.

The Filipino accent is highly questionable and Thai people are hardly impressed by the Philippines in general. I think it would work against you to have a degree from there as European.

I'd check with some of the schools in Thailand and make sure the schools accept the degree you are studying online.

Also check with the online degree, you may be able to work on more subjects at the one time and finish the degree quicker.

He is just jealous because he doesn’t fit it in Thailand, whereas others like myself have been virtually adopted by the lovely Thai people, who have never been colonized.

if there was a country with more wonderful people I would move there but I have found heaven on earth and am not leaving.

This time of year really brings out how special Thailand is with millions traveling to visit their families and have fun with their old friends.
So lovely

Many Thai parents do mind their kids being taught by Filipino's be aware of this. Also be aware they are not paid the same wage as a Native Speaker from a western country. I think its time for a plan B.

some schools have swapped out farang English teachers for filipino English teachers - My experience was that sucked big time so we moved to different schools as the English training suffered and I am an American so I know the Enlish language well but could never be a teacher of such here.  The people in charge of the schools obviously don't care either or they wouldn't swap out the farang English teachers that I also know.  Not all but those I have experienced so...IMO a degree online from the PI will not make you a good English teacher for the Thais.

IMO it would be better to get a TEFL in Thailand than a Bachelor's degree from the Philippines.

If I was a Thai school principal, I would be questioning why a white-skinned Czech chose the Philippines to get a degree.

The OP also might want to check out his accent with other English speakers.

I remember a Latin teacher from Cumbria, northern England. It took us 6 months to understand what he was saying in English, let alone Latin.

If you get a Bachelor's degree from any recognised university, then it is recognised.

We're not talking about working for an International School here.

I think with a recognised degree from the Philipines, regardless of your home country, you could get a job teaching in Thailand.

Right!  So go straight to iTalki.com and register as a community teacher of Czech language (and any other language where you are a native/almost native speaker).

The fact that you are (I assume) a native speaker of Czech language gives you an advantage over the many thousands of English teachers who 'swamp' that website.

Then go and register on other learn-language websites.  Typical hourly rates of pay seem to be between $10 - $20 per hour.  Over the years, I have earned more than $100,000 USD from teaching online via iTalki 🙂

I had a good friend (deceased now) in Myanmar who taught English to middle school students in Yangon.  He was a smart chap but spoke English with a very thick Scottish accent.  I once asked some of his students what they learnt in their lesson with him today.  They replied 'We have no idea because no one can understand him!'

The question is whether an online degree is recognized, irrespective of the university of origin.

IMO a degree from the National University of Samoa won't have the same cachet as Oxford.

It might work for you.

So yes, the degree from the Philippines is worth looking into.

Some companies will definitely hire you with  a degree from the Philippines.

Seems like with a TEFL and that degree you can get hired.

A guy I know is teaching for an agency with a TEFL and no degree but he is a native English speaker.

Apparently, the school gets a call on the down low if any kind of onsite audit of teacher qualifications is being done and teachers like him don't work that day.

If you look at the jobs page on that well-known teacher's site (you should know if you have researched this at all), the agency has a name that will remind you of trigonometry class and is always advertising. (Just checked they have multiple ads up today.)

Agencies and also Language Schools have different rules that they use and may be different as far as Thai law applies to them. Also, tutoring schools have different requirements; these are the schools where kids go after their regular school day or on weekends.

So there are opportunities.

Also, you might be looking at the low end of the pay scale, and you might need to be willing to work in the provinces.

I disagree, Samoa has a Girl Scout cookie named after it, Oxford has a type of shoe.

But seriously, you think that attending Oxford is relevant to this conversation?

You think the OP is weighing should he go to Oxford or should he go to Our Lady of Perpetual Light in the PI?

I understand that a diploma from Europe or Australia has a better reputation, but still, many Filipinos in Thailand are working as teachers. That means Thai schools dont have a problem with their diplomas. The Thai government requires teachers to have a TOEFL and a recognized diploma in any field. A Filipino diploma is recognized, so I would meet all the requirements.

Why should I pay for an expensive Australian diploma when I can get a much cheaper one from the Philippines? I believe, in the end, it’s all about English proficiency, not the diploma itself  that’s just a formality.

Another thing – why would someone with an excellent background, for example in engineering, want to teach English for a few thousand baht when they can earn a great salary in their home country? I don’t believe there are many white people with Oxford degrees teaching in rural Roi Et.
