A horrifying scene unfolded in the early hours of the morning of 18 April, when a BMW SUV was found engulfed in flames beside Thung Burapha sports ground in Ubon Ratchathani. Fire crews discovered a man’s charred body inside the vehicle, with reports indicating the presence of a charcoal stove in the driver’s footwell.

Police received the emergency call at around 00:30 and officers from Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station, along with fire services from multiple local agencies and nearby rescue units, were immediately dispatched to the scene in the Nong Khon Subdistrict.

The BMW, found without registration plates, was ablaze in a wooded area adjacent to the sports complex. Firefighters battled the flames for over 30 minutes before managing to extinguish the fire. Initial inspection revealed the vehicle had crashed into an embankment near a drainage canal before catching fire, resulting in the complete destruction of the car.

Inside the driver’s seat, responders discovered the body of an unidentified man, burned beyond recognition. A charcoal stove was found on the floor of the vehicle, raising concerns that the fire may have been intentionally started inside the cabin.

Investigators contacted forensic specialists from Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital and local detectives to assist at the scene. By tracing the car’s chassis number, police determined the vehicle was previously registered in Bangkok and had once been owned by a woman identified only as Ms. Uthaiwan, who confirmed she had sold the car several years ago in an unregistered transfer. The current owner and victim remain unidentified.

Authorities have not yet determined whether the incident was an accident or suicide. Due to the severe burning of the body, the remains will be sent to Bangkok for forensic examination to establish identity and determine the precise cause of death.

A local resident, 19-year-old Mr. Apinan, told reporters he witnessed the vehicle swerving erratically shortly before the fire broke out. He recalled a black pickup truck following closely behind and sounding its horn repeatedly, possibly attempting to warn the driver. Minutes later, fire engines and rescue units rushed into the area.

Investigations are ongoing, with police appealing for anyone with information about the vehicle or the deceased to come forward.
