Report Severe Diarrhoea Outbreak in Lampang Affects Over 3,000

Lampang province is experiencing a severe outbreak of diarrhoea, with over 3,000 cases reported. The outbreak is widespread, with no apparent link to consumption of specific foods, and is believed to be triggered by the unusually hot weather making food spoil more easily.

 

As of 28th April, reports indicate that the number of cases has been on the rise since 21st April. Preliminary investigations reveal that the increase in diarrhoea cases is not concentrated among specific groups, nor is it linked to any particular food consumption.

 

The extreme heat is suspected of causing food to spoil more rapidly, leading to a surge in hospital admissions.

 

 

 

Authorities are advising the public on preventive measures against diarrhoeal diseases.

 

They recommend consuming freshly cooked, hot, and clean food, avoiding raw or undercooked food, and ensuring leftovers are reheated thoroughly before consumption. Regular handwashing with soap is also advised before handling food.

 

Current reports suggest the presence of the rotavirus, a pathogen known to cause diarrhoea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The virus spreads through oral-faecal transmission and is primarily found in children under five, but also affects adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Some Thai people give me the sh!ts , Leaving the food out on the tables /bench  no wonder people get sick.Lucky I had tis only twices over the years  from some food stall that had their  food in the sun for hours after that no more food stalls for me , only  home cooking.

Main culprits are the sauces, coconut milk, and grilled meat... prepared night prior to sales in early morning and be consumed until evening...

Most likely culprit then would be the water supply. But I doubt that would be a quick assumption to spread around.

Doesnt say much for Thai hygiene does it. Haven’t they learnt anything in the last 20:plus years. A French man I knew in Phuket had a restaurant. He used to tell me horror stories about his staff. He said you can teach them all you can, but it goes in one ear and out the other. In front of you they do as you say, turn your back and its back to usual. He closed down after a while, his food was fantastic. 
Who hasn’t seen the up front sushi stalls in Malls, everyone poking them and breathing on them, makes me want to throw up just looking. Or often a stir fry comes with the meat still red in the middle ugh. 
I often end up eating vegetarian in the one on the left after Tuc Com.Super tasty food and everything in the kitchen shines , spotless . Works well.

Its not as if Thailand has hit a sudden heatwave thats 10 degrees hotter spoiling frozen food etc... 

 

Its is likely a local bacterial or viral endemic...

absolutely nothing to do with food on display in the hot sun, or the stall vendor picking their nose,  or every Tom,Dik and Somchai picking up / touching multiple skewered food with their hands and placing them back on the display pile..    flies ..  veggies getting chopped on the same wood cutting board as the raw chicken ..     

plastic baggies of  "food"  left in the car .  and then on the counter all day   everybody dipping the personal spoon into the family bowl 

or the workers that have one  water jug with "one" cup floating in the bucket that everyone uses

naaaaa.   can't be any of these ...

Richard, Your first sentence has no merit. I am surprised at you - you are better than that!

 

The photo doesn't need to show gloop - that is very silly!

 

It needs to give us an impression of a few patients waiting for attention, especially in an emergency room!
