Do we actually need a pope in today’s world? With so many urgent global issues like poverty, wars, disease, natural

disasters, and climate change, it seems strange to focus so much attention on spiritual hierarchy. Maybe it’s time to ask whether all that energy and influence could be better spent on solving problems that affect the whole planet. Plus, centralizing spiritual authority in one person opens the door to corruption, power struggles, and a lack of accountability. The whole thing seems like such a waste of time and energy, maybe more people should start living in the real world.

To the believers, this real world will end and we are looking forward to a better place afterwards. This is one reason we need a spiritual leader. Without as many believers in God, can you imagine how the world would be, everyone thinking they could do whatever they want with no consequences besides those we get here?

The only institution that needs a Pope is the Roman Catholic Church. I was brought up in that denomination and was able to leave it behind by age 15. I consider myself fortunate that I was able to divest myself of all Catholic and all religious thought.

Obviously the "world" doesn't need a pope, but the RC church does.  Although the Pope does act as a moral leader and is often involved in trying to resolve world conflicts.

Casting the religious beliefs and elements aside, I am not going to advocate for those.

Francis was known for his interest and offering help in those exact areas you mention

"poverty, wars, disease, natural disasters, and climate change" alongside many others that may have a lesser voice.

Now compare that to current world leadership, are they focused on those, have they been, would we need to divert attention and resources to those if they were?

We do need more voices in this area, I'm not going to suggest politics, greed and corruption does not exist within religious communities but alternatively if they can be a voice for good, why not?

There is potential for a lot of good even if past experience may argue otherwise, I dont see a lot of others willing to step up though.

Pedophilia, or at least covering it up in the Catholic Church?

Has this ANYthing vital to do with the World ? Or only with the Roman Catholic Church ? Or even the diocese of Rome ?

Does the World need a grab-them-by-the-pussy" guy as president of the USA ? Of more a person, who belongs in a prison ?

Religion is certainly the biggest and longest-lasting conspiracy theory there's ever been.

Books of unknown provenance, people conversing with their imaginary friends.

It's all medieval nonsense.

There's lot's of insane stuff to it but the worst of it IMO is the indoctrination and brainwashing of children from birth so as to perpetuate the myth.

Are you Catholic?

The pope has to do with the business of Catholicism.

So when you say "we" are you aware that it is nunya if you aren't Catholic.

You are definitely free to say "who cares?" if there is a pope or not.

Pretty insulting, but no doubt it won't be removed.

I learned a long time ago that religion no matter what the Creed is pretty ridiculous. Nevertheless, it's simply not my place to criticize what other people want to believe. I suggest you explore that position and mature a bit

It's not what other people believe it's more how some of the "believers" force their beliefs on others.

See @dinsdale post above.

If people want to worship something, and don't harm others, then it's basically harmless, BUT look at fundamentalists of various faiths, taking religion and twisting it to cause dissent, violence and war. THERE's the harm.
