It punishes the criminal

And leaves a victim suffering. The landlord is still stuck with the  expensive damages. Who will take care of the victim?

So Anastasia took over the rent from a Russian, most probably without a new contract. Then asks for the deposit (witch the Russian paid) back. Somehow I would be very reluctant to pay her a deposit back that she paid (or not) to somebody else. Than gets temper tantrum, like a good Gen Z Girl, probably combined with PMS. Now she has time to cool down and learn a valuable lesson.

Do you suppose the Russian cleared off without getting their 32,000 back from somebody?

If the Thai owner was not still holding 32,000 why would she be going through the motions of processing its return.....as she stated she was:

"The property owner emphasised that she had been following proper procedures, as stipulated in the lease agreement. These included a 14-day window to process the deposit return, deductions for unpaid utility bills..........",

It sounds like Miss Anastasia might well have paid 32,000 to the Russian on the Russians assurance that she would get it back from the Thai owner.

Far be it from me to suggest that the Thai owner may have been using this technicality: "the requirement that refunds be made only to the person listed on the contract." not to pay the out of pocket Miss Anastasia.

Pure speculation.

The owner must have the Russians details? has he gone from Thailand? surely they will check to see if he is still here,

Who's going to pay for the damages? The one month or even two month security deposit does not cover the damages, sending her to jail wont pay for that,

But it PUNISHES THE CRIMINAL  thus setting an example to other Russian criminals who might have the same idea of destroying a landlord's property.

But it will punish her for her crime which was pretty serious.

That is speculation. She smashed the place up, tried to exhort money that was not owed to her and then did a runner not just fleeing the scene of the crime but trying to leave the country! Where she was caught at departure gates at the airport. She sounds a right badun to me.

The condo damage was reported to the police on 29th April, this woman tries to fly out of Thailand on 10th May. Seems to me that she has a 'screw loose'.  Should have left Thailand asap after wrecking the condo....

A screw loose for not escaping on time? You speak from experience?
