Is there an ESim only option in Thailand for Smartphone access to the Internet?

Featured Replies

Hi Members.

As mobileWhen visiting Thailand, I would usually purchase a Mobile Sim/Plan for my Smartphone needs for the duration of my visit.

I've found I rarely need a Mobile Number to be allocated as I can get by with EMail, LINE Moblie, & similar services.

Is there an ESim only, minus a phone number account which will cover me when I'm unable to access WiFi?

If there is, is this a cheaper option, and where is a good place to get one (e.g. 7/11 etc)?

thanks

R

If only using WIFI then you don’t need a SIM, but if you want “Data” then you’re going to need one.

Depends on where you’re planning to travel but AIS is probably the safest bet, bought 2 for Mum & Dad when they visited in Feb, IIRC it was 50B (each) for the SIM card & I topped up 200B (each) which was more than enough for their 30 day stay (given most places have WIFI).

It would be helpful if you stated how long you plan to be in country and how much data you typically use… The big carriers have tourist esims but will be relatively expensive, little data and short duration….

Both options have numbers attached and the costs are exactly the same.

This was the information I needed.

50b for the sim plus data top ups.

It beats the 600b & 1,000b baht offers at the airport.

Take note that @JB300 mentioned February. After which there has been a push by the networks to restrict sales of 50 baht SIM without an expensive package. Hopefully that initiative has failed miserably. But don't say you weren't warned if you come up against it.

Your best bet is to order them online a day or two before arrival . Still just 50 baht there. You can add a one month data pack for as little as 15 to 27 baht, if you use it sparingly. But realistically, 200 to 300 baht for more comprehensive packages.

Marathon Max(50 GB of 15 Mbps) is 590 baht for three months.

This was the package I got for my parents…

Seems to still be available to purchase online…

Thanks J.

I'm out of the country & once I arrive I'm not sure that online will be the way for me.

Hopefully this offer will also be available at 7/11.

Cheers

It won't be available at 7-11, as they distribute TRUE exclusively.... and it's not a package anyway. It's a base plan. You would need to add a package.

Order via Lazada to be delivered to your hotel/apartment/house prior to your arrival.

I'm pretty sure I saw an AIS shop at the airport  on the lower floors  near to where the taxis and busses leave.

There is one at Suvarnabhuni. Good luck with getting them to issue a 50 baht SIM without browbeating you into obtaining a 30 day package costing another 375 baht attached to it. Unlimited 10Mbps, I guess.

Airport outlets need to make money in order to cover high rents. Let us know how it goes.

Bought mine at the AIS store in Central Festival, originally I was looking for the 50B “Social Media” SIM (parents only needed Data for WhatsApp) but they didn’t have any so went for that one.

If the Super Social SIM is not available, buy any AIS SIM and within 30 days apply *777*498#

That will convert the Base Plan to the Super Social SIM. Surprising they don't tell you that at the shop.

You have to top up 150 baht to get the unlimited 4Mbps data for chat applications. Do that after the conversion.

I'll be arriving at Don Meung.

Sadly on 30 in the country so I'll have to wing it.

I'll try the airport, failing that Terminal 21 at Asoke.

Will give feedback once it's done.

Another option would be to pick up a discounted Tourist SIM at DMK, rather than turning up in the hope of getting a 50 baht SIM.

https://www.klook.com/activity/74427-truemoveh-thailand-tourist-sim-card/ 238 baht for 50GB over ten days, as opposed to the normal 349 baht.

In addition, you get a month of free travel insurance: https://www.true.th/international/roaming/tourist-sim/dtac-free-travel-insurance-term if you register the policy within 24 hours of activating the SIM: https://www.true.th/international/roaming/tourist-sim/true-free-travel-insurance

and varied 'privileges': https://www.truemoveh-thailandsim.com/privileges

DTAC similarly: https://www.klook.com/activity/16587-dtac-4g-sim-thailand

DMK seems to be more expensive than BKK.

Thanks Jake.

The true offer on this link appears to be sold out.

I'll still front up to the True & DTAC counters to look for any replacements.

Shows as available for me:

Payment details

Bangkok · Don Mueang Airport (DMK) - True Shop · 10 days · 50 GB · Data and calls included

SIM Card฿ 238 x1

Something that might bring you some success, is to go armed with details of a package costing 300 baht and asking them how much that will cost you in total. If the price is 350 baht, then go ahead. If not, move on.

Examples

AIS: *777*9272#

TRUE/DTAC: *900*7597#

All much the same package.

20 GB max speed then

60GB 15Mbps then

Unlimited 1Mbps

Unlimited calls of up to 15 minutes per call

AIS offer a bonus of another 20 GB of max speed data.

TRUE, unlimited WiFi Hotspot usage.

Take that along with you on a piece of paper and ask how much to apply it. You are more likely to succeed with this, as you'll be within their minimum spend threshold.

I've printed all your information.

Will  see if I can drive a deal at DMK.

Will feed back when I've settled in Bangkok.
