Thai Court Orders Yingluck to Pay 10 Billion Baht Over Rice Scheme

Thailand’s Supreme Administrative Court has ordered former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to pay 10 billion baht (approx. $306 million) in damages linked to her government's rice-pledging scheme. The controversial programme, which aimed to support farmers by purchasing rice at above-market prices, was later criticised for corruption and major financial losses. The ruling partially overturns a previous court decision that annulled a 2016 Ministry of Finance order. Though less than the 35.7 billion baht originally sought, the verdict reignites debate over accountability and the political fallout from Yingluck’s tenure.
