The Ministry of Public Health has assured residents near the Kok, Sai, and Mekong rivers that there is no arsenic contamination in tap water, vegetables, or fish, despite initial arsenic findings in surface water. Ongoing monitoring has been implemented to ensure public safety, especially in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces where elevated arsenic levels were detected.

Public Health Minister and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra have expressed concern about the contamination in surface water, particularly around the Kok River in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai, and six districts in Chiang Rai: Mueang, Chiang Saen, Mae Chan, Wiang Chai, Wiang Chiang Rung, and Mae Sai. Initial reports from the Department of Health and the Department of Medical Sciences confirmed these findings.

Despite surface water contamination, tests showed no arsenic in potable water sources or local produce and fish, reassuring residents regarding their food and water safety. Furthermore, arsenic levels in urine tests for at-risk populations in these areas have been reported as normal, indicating no immediate health threats from the contamination.

The minister has directed local health agencies to maintain rigorous monitoring of environmental and food safety indicators. Regular arsenic screenings will continue for both water sources and urine samples from vulnerable groups to prevent potential health issues.

Residents are advised to avoid using untreated natural water and to consume only filtered water. The public health officials are committed to resolving the issue, ensuring community well-being and rebuilding trust in the safety of local water sources. Ongoing communication with the affected communities will keep them informed about the measures taken and the improvements achieved in managing the arsenic contamination.
