Report Mishandled Balikbayan Boxes Delivered to Families by DMW
File photo for reference only In a significant relief for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their loved ones, nearly 3,000 mishandled balikbayan boxes have been handed over to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) after being abandoned by unscrupulous freight forwarders. These boxes, typically filled with gifts and essential items sent by OFWs, serve as a heartfelt connection between Filipinos abroad and their families back home. The process began when the Bureau of Customs (BOC) identified these boxes as unclaimed due to mishandling. Recognising their importance, the BOC took decisive action by classifying them as forfeited goods, with a view to redirecting them to their rightful recipients. The Department of Finance (DOF) supported this initiative, in alignment with the President's directive to ensure government services are responsive to the needs of Filipino families. "These boxes, meant to spread love and support from OFWs, had unfortunately stalled in their journey due to inefficiencies," a BOC representative stated in a recent press release. The BOC and DMW have been working together since early 2024 to overcome the legal and logistical hurdles of reclaiming and rerouting these parcels to the intended recipients. With the deed of donation between the BOC and DMW now signed, the DMW has partnered with a reliable logistics provider to ensure the prompt and safe delivery of these boxes. "Our aim is to reunite families with the packages they have been longing for," said a representative from the DMW. "We've been diligent in securing every legal clearance and documenting each step to prevent future mishaps." As part of this effort, the DMW is maintaining open communication with both freight companies and recipients, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process. Commissioner Rubio assured the public that, after thorough coordination, families can now expect their long-delayed packages to finally reach their doors. This intervention not only mends previous delivery mishaps but also underscores a more dependable system for future shipments, highlighting the administration's commitment to addressing the concerns of Filipino families and enhancing the efficiency of government services. The initiative marks a hopeful development for OFWs, reinforcing the nation's commitment to valuing their contributions and supporting their kin at home. Motorbike for a 16 year old?
I would be terrified if he went on his friends bikes as a passenger, because he did not have one himself. -
