Report Thai Government Backs Thaksin's Strategy to Tackle Drug Menace

The Thai government and Royal Thai Police (RTP) have endorsed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's strategic plan to tackle the nation's drug problem. Highlighted at a recent Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) event, Thaksin's approach involves boosting regional diplomacy and redirecting a portion of the government's 157-billion-baht economic stimulus budget to amplify anti-narcotics efforts.

 

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul praised Thaksin’s proposals as "constructive" and aligned with existing government policies. Many initiatives, like village-level surveillance and establishing drug-free "white zones", are already underway, with the Interior Ministry poised to further synergise with the police, military, and civil bodies to enhance these measures.

 

A fundamental aspect of Thaksin’s plan is fostering diplomacy. The Foreign Affairs Ministry will engage in discussions with neighbouring countries to launch joint anti-drug efforts, reflecting Thaksin's call for robust international cooperation to address transnational drug issues. Anutin noted that failing to address drug production in border areas poses a threat to national security.

 

The strategy also calls for reallocating part of the 157-billion-baht economic stimulus fund to bolster anti-narcotics activities, a move that aligns with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's policies.

 

National police chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch affirmed the police's intensified focus on grassroots crackdowns since April 2024. These efforts aim to ensure drug-free villages and disrupt trafficking routes. The Narcotics Suppression Bureau, in collaboration with ONCB and local authorities, employs comprehensive X-ray-style scans in sub-districts to uproot drug dealers, striving for complete eradication in communities.

 

These anti-drug initiatives fall under the "Seal, Stop, Safe" government framework, addressing all facets of the drug supply chain, from initial entry to distribution and rehabilitation. This integrated approach showcases Thailand's intensified commitment to curbing its drug crisis through both domestic and international collaborations.‍

Drugs are not a menace.  Society is. If we just put them in context and removed the hysteria and hype we ALL would be a lot better off. Most recreational drug users are just self medicating and those that aren't need LOVE and support not punitive punishment such as imprisonment like they do in IRAN, SAUDI, OMAN, & all the Islamic countries where most people smoke dope but receive a serious punishment if they get caught unless they have "wasta" or influence.
