The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) is demanding clarification from the Police General Hospital (PGH) following reports that Vonnarat Tangkaravakoon, a former executive and major shareholder of Stark Corporation, received preferential treatment at their facility while in custody. This request is part of an inquiry into whether Vonnarat, a defendant in a high-profile fraud case, was granted special privileges while undergoing medical care.

 

On 29th May, an NHRC insider confirmed sending a letter to the hospital’s chief medical officer. The commission seeks information on the care Vonnarat received, particularly concerned by reports that he was accommodated in a high-level private room on the hospital's 14th floor—a claim raising questions about fairness in treatment procedures for detainees.

 

The backdrop of this probe is the major Stark Corporation scandal. In 2023, revelations of accounting fraud and embezzlement surfaced, with damages pegged at an estimated 14.7 billion baht. The scandal adversely affected at least 4,000 investors, and its cable-manufacturing arm, Phelps Dodge International (Thailand) Ltd, alone reported 12 billion baht in damages from over 200 dubious transactions carried out between 2021 and 2022. Additional irregularities accounting for 3.6 billion baht were uncovered within other Stark business units.

 

Following an investigation, police issued arrest warrants for Vonnarat and other Stark executives, charging them with manipulating financial documents, misleading investment stakeholders, and inflicting substantial economic damage on Thailand's stock market.

 

Vonnarat was captured by the Department of Special Investigation at a Bangkok hospital on 10th February last year. Following this, he was charged by the Office of the Attorney General but was denied bail by the Criminal Court, resulting in his transfer to Bangkok Remand Prison.

 

While held, Vonnarat faced several health complications, including a painful groin inflammation. He initially sought treatment at Corrections Hospital on 13th February 2024 before being transferred to Police General Hospital for necessary surgical intervention.

 

The NHRC’s investigation aims to rectify potential disparities and ensure that all detainees receive equitable treatment regardless of their status. While the hospital has reportedly cooperated, the commission indicates that key aspects of Vonnarat's alleged special treatment remain unanswered. As scrutiny persists, the NHRC continues to advocate for transparency and equal treatment within Thailand's penal and medical systems.

This man is a thief and a con man. Using the billions he stole from investors to have  cushy accomodation in prison Thaksin style. 

The Thai prison system is rife with corruption.
