In a brazen attack on 28th May, over ten heavily armed gunmen targeted the Chanae Police Station in Narathiwat, deploying two M60 machine guns as reported by the Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 9. The assault resulted in the tragic death of 30-year-old Sergeant Major Abdullor Makaseng, who bravely confronted the attackers, and left 33-year-old Police Lance Corporal Jesada Promrat severely injured with chest wounds during the 15-minute gunfire exchange. The assailants retreated after the confrontational attack.

On 29th May, Police Lieutenant General Piyawat Chalermsri, the Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 9, alongside the Fourth Army Area Commander, inspected the scene, acknowledging the calculated nature of the attack. The perpetrators strategically positioned themselves 80 metres from the station’s front, utilising a combination of M60 machine guns and rifles to maximise their assault on state officials.

Police General Kittirat Phanphet, the national police chief, praised the courageous response of the officers, stressing the challenges faced due to the attacking force's formidable armament. Emphasising officer welfare, he proposed bolstering special operations units' presence in remote areas to better safeguard against such aggressive incidents.

Currently, police forces are intensively collecting evidence at the attack site and working diligently to pursue the assailants, believed to be in hiding nearby. In the wake of this assault, security protocols have been tightened to avert potential future threats, prioritising enhanced protection for officers and the community. Support for the families of the affected officers is being prioritised, underscoring the community’s solidarity during this challenging time.
