Accident British Tourist, 59, Dies in Tragic Fall in Phuket

A British tourist, Kerry Bruce, aged 59, tragically passed away after falling from a steep incline in Patong, Phuket, following a night out. The accident has left her partner, Stewart Raynor, profoundly shaken.

 

On June 4, Police Lieutenant Chittawan Pengkaew received a report regarding Bruce's death at Patong Hospital. He promptly informed Police Colonel Chaloemchai Hoensawat and went on to confirm the unfortunate news at the hospital.

 

Initial investigations revealed that Bruce and Raynor had enjoyed an evening at a local restaurant before heading back to their hotel in the Patong subdistrict. Unfortunately, while ascending the steep hotel path, Bruce, reportedly under the influence, lost her footing and fell approximately 6 to 7 metres.

 

The fall resulted in devastating injuries, including a broken neck, fractured nose, and injuries to her wrist and ankle. Despite prompt medical assistance from the Kusoldharm Foundation and efforts by Patong Hospital staff, Bruce did not survive.

 

The tragic accident is being thoroughly investigated by local authorities, including a detailed post-mortem examination conducted by the investigating police officer in partnership with hospital staff. Meanwhile, the British embassy has been informed to coordinate with Bruce's family for her repatriation and funeral arrangements.

 

The incident underscores the potential dangers tourists might face and the importance of taking precautions to ensure safety during their travels.

A stupidly complacent conclusion to draw from a tragic incident.

Isn't it the responsibility of the road owner (government or hotel) to ensure there are no potentially fatal drops from it? Is suggesting a barrier of some kind too complex?

Very sad and unnecessary.

Nobody else had a problem with this site.

You can not protect against every scenario or put barriers everywhere.

I hope for the woman’s sake this is investigated properly. 
I have my doubts.

Nobody else was reported as being killed. We don't know whether anybody else had problems or sustained injuries.

The investigation might suggest putting up barriers but as you suggest an investigation isn't likely

Certainly could happen.

I'm a bit older than this unfortunate woman but I sometimes lose my balance briefly if I  turn my head too fast.

 

I often think mishaps are avoidable but this one may just have been very bad luck and bad timing.

You may be right and it was bad luck and bad timing. Of course drunkenness will have contributed.

 

Still, I can’t help but think that a hotel path (assuming that is what it was) should be adequately fenced off from 6/7 metre falls that could be fatal. But maybe there is a fence and she was climbing on it?

Curiouser and curiouser. The article says she was “ascending”, so it seems she was climbing a flight of steps and fell back down them. Because she was drunk.

 

i don’t know why the article couldn’t have just said that. It makes much more sense than the steep incline thing

I believe this. So many dodgy stairs with no rails and landings too short to put a full foot on. Safety is simply not a strong priority in Thailand.

Give me a break!  Give me a break! Kerry must have been completely wasted not being able to navigate these steps. I've seen retiress 20 years older than our nanny-state kerry navigate these steps with ease. What's there to investigate????

  I am in my 60s and have a bad knee. I could see me struggling with this "incline" that does not have hand rails....

There was a heavy rainfall a few weeks ago. I slipped on a flight of stairs and nearly fell backward on my head. I nearly died. Can't blame the stairs I guess.

Falling from a steep incline ? Falling backwards down steps would be more accurate. Easily done if not fully in control.

No need to call in Sherlock Holmes on this case. She went out for the night,drank too much, got legless , fell over on the steep track to her hotel , landed on her head  , broken neck etc and died.very sad . Her husband must have been just as drunk and could not assist her up the track.

Yeah, the only issue is no hand rail. Although I think it has to be said that in her inebriated condition it’s doubtful that she would have been safely holding on to it, if it had been there.

 

Cant help but feel that drunkenness was the deciding factor in this accident.

It's a damn walkway, if they can build a walkway then they can build a barrier... Obviously you are not a thinking person... Or just one of those who believe they are the protectors of all things Thai, time to grow up.
