Although Taweewat has asserted ownership, discrepancies between his reported income and the possession of such a significant sum have raised suspicion among investigators. The cash was discovered earlier in the week, and video footage from the condominium corroborated Taweewat's narrative. It showed that the box was originally inside his apartment, which had suffered water leaks. This aligns with Taweewat's explanation for why the box was placed elsewhere. Police Lieutenant General Surapol Prembut, commissioner of Provincial Police Region 1, confirmed that Taweewat has provided relevant information during questioning. While police suspect the money belongs to him, a comprehensive investigation is in progress to trace the origins of the funds. This includes determining the source account, identifying who made the withdrawals, and understanding how the cash came to be outside his condominium. Initial findings indicate the cash withdrawals were made through multiple transactions in May 2020. Taweewat hinted at political motives for withdrawing the money but has not elaborated further. However, financial records submitted by him do not corroborate the legitimacy of acquiring 12 million baht, prompting investigators to probe deeper. Questions also linger about the rationale for storing such a large amount of cash in a personal space rather than in a bank or safe. As part of the ongoing investigation, police plan to interview Taweewat’s wife and examine all pertinent evidence thoroughly. Moreover, Police Major General Charoonkiat Pankaew, deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), announced that anti-corruption agencies, including the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), will collaborate with the police. Their objective is to strategise on tracing the money's origin and verifying whether it results from legitimate legal work as claimed, or if it stems from illicit sources. Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat voiced skepticism over the decision not to deposit the money in a bank, deeming the explanation inadequate.
