BANGKOK –  A leading doctor at Bangkok Police General Hospital has been arrested for illegally selling sleeping pills classified as controlled substances.

On 10th June 2025, health ministry officials joined narcotics police to raid a police apartment in Ari, suspected of storing illicit sleeping pills.

They confiscated around ten boxes of the pills, capturing two individuals. One arrestee, a well-known female Police Colonel, is believed to be the operation’s leader, having placed unusual drug orders since 2022.

Lieutenant Colonel Thanakrit Chittareerat, Assistant to the Public Health Minister, stated that the Police Colonel utilised a network of 11 clinics to place abnormally large orders of sleeping pills.

These were stored and then sold, mostly to youths who misuse the drugs. Financial investigations revealed a monetary flow of over 80 million baht linked to the operation since 2022.

Dr Witit Srisutthichaiyakhul, Deputy Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration, noted that such drugs must only be prescribed by licensed medical practitioners within healthcare facilities. The FDA is able to trace all prescriptions back to specific patients.

Former Deputy National Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Suchart Thirasawat confirmed the involvement of a scheduled psychotropic substance, raising charges of drug possession and potential money laundering.

Further investigations are in progress, with evidence pointing to the involvement of approximately five more doctors.

Corrupt from the bottom to the top, and across all branches.

Number one rule in Thailand, whatever scam is involved, don't be greedy. Share the profits with those who have the power to prosecute.

Since when is Xanax (alprazolam) a sleeping pill? It is RARELY used as a sleep aid. It is a anti-anxiety med!

I've been prescribed it twice (0.5mg) as a sleeping pill in Thailand, including at a well-known private hospital in Bangkok a few months ago.

My doctor in Australia had a similar reaction to yours when I told him.

Seems the doctor has her grubby little fingers in a lot of pies.

"The investigation found that previously in 2022, a victim had filed a complaint against Pol. Col. (Female) Dr. Anchulee Thirawongpaisan, a physician (Pol. Lt. Col. 5), Family Medicine Group, Police General Hospital, regarding the case in which the victim had given her money to help extend her visa to stay in Thailand. This case is currently in the process of being sued in the Criminal Court."

Very poor reporting by BK News. Try substances commonly used in the production of date rape drugs

Thai Enquirer 11 June:

General News
• A female doctor from Police General Hospital has been arrested for illegally distributing
controlled substances commonly used in the production of date rape drugs over a four-year
period. Authorities found she used the names of 11 clinics in Bangkok to order
alprazolam—classified as a type 2 and type 4 controlled substance—which may only be
prescribed by licensed physicians.
❖ The investigation began after the FDA detected irregularities in drug purchase
records. A search of Pol. Col. Dr. Anchulee Phetcharat’s residence uncovered large
quantities of the drug stored in boxes. A male suspect, believed to be responsible
for handling the drugs, was also taken into custody.
❖ In total, four individuals were arrested, including Dr. Anchulee. Investigators
showed that she was the sole purchaser, placing orders through the FDA between
2022 and 2025, worth 15 million Baht. Financial tracking revealed a wider
operation with over 80 million Baht in circulation. The drugs were stored off-site
and sold mainly to young buyers for recreational use, including as date rape drugs.

Correct. Not a sleeping pill. It's a sedative, anti anxiety.
