I am trying to make this short, something I have never experienced.

I went on a trip up north to Chiang Mai and Lampang. Found a good restaurant.

So I thought, "Let's have dinner." Being hungry after a long drive, I asked for a menu card, only to be told there was none. I asked politely, "How can I know what to order?"

The answer was "You just have to log on to our website and order,, not having my smartphone

with me, still in my luggage. Why can't they have just a single menu card for people without smartphones ? I noticed a few

people left as well. I am not here complaining, but I guess they could have at least one single one

for people without smartphones. Rant over.

You had a smartphone in the car.  You were too lazy to go get it.  Yet you had to time to log in and type up this silly rant.  Drama queen alert.

The day I have to use a phone to read a restaurant's menu is the day they permanently lose a customer.

Then of course they want you to pay the bill by scanning a QR code too no doubt?  Then they tell you their internet is down.  You try mobile data but that fails to work and you can't connect to your bank.

The next day:

Foreigner Beat Severely By Restaurant Employees After Failing To Pay Bill

"Farang deadbeat is in police custody.  Hospital refused to treat him because he can't attach to his bank's payment portal.  Claims he 'was unable to connect his phone to his bank's payment system to pay the restaurant bill' but promised to pay once he could get to an ATM.  Sensing the foreigner would fail to pay, the staff beat the farang with a metal rod after his debit card failed to work as the ATM service was down as well.  Restaurant owner states they 'don't take cash' anyway, and "The Internet Is Down" isn't a sufficiently good excuse if the customer is a farang. The restaurant staff refuse to comment further on this case other to say, their 'Internet is down' and cannot connect to answer the reporter's questions."
News Details At 6!

Every time I read about tourist being beaten half to death for "not paying their bill" I immediately wonder if the bar/restaurant they went to only takes cashless and the farang can't get his phone to attached to their bank to pay the bill, and then it escalates from there with accusations that the farang is a cheat, a thief, and tried to skip out on the bill when the actual story may be that the establishment requires you to pay electronically but the connectivity to the Internet and to bank portals is down.

No thank you.  I'll go to a restaurant with a menu and also takes cash.  Then there can be no misunderstandings.

Then let's not even talk about freaking restaurants robots!  Gawd!  :glare:

"Excuse me sir, but the excuse that "The Internet Is Down And You Can't Connect To Your Bank" is not a valid excuse.  Unfortunately we will need to terminate you."

Not sure if I can use a western credit card for Lazada, but Scuba's option seems better.

Or then again, Lazada can also refund into the Lazada wallet. So if a western credit card works, that might be an option. Just wonder if scammers get into that site to steal credit card info.

Yes, you can use a Western credit card - I use one for all my Lazada purchases - but I don't let them save it for future use, so that reduces the chance of scammers getting a hold of it.

First of all, they should tell all customers in advance that they don't take cash.

Secondly, how would they stay in business if the connectivity goes down frequently? Doesn't make sense. If they got rid of cash, it must be that the connectivity is reliable.

No establishment wants trouble from police. It almost certainly was a case of the patron not wanting to pay.

I use a non thai credit card, refunds go there if you use to pay, I don't save CC details on Lazada

The other day,  trying to pay 65 B for a meal at a Lotussss food court:

Cash not accepted.

Food court card not accepted,  as they are not part of the food court (they just happen to be in the middle of it).

Wise card not accepted,  its too foreign.

Thai debit card not accepted, we only accept Lotussss green and white card.

Thai banking QR code accepted.

Digitalization is so convenient (for whoever they sold my data to).

About as techy as I get, is reading the menu with Glens/translate.   Won't order or pay with my phone.

Did my first Burger King self order, and good thing there was a ''pay at counter" option, or I would have left.   How that or any of these tech things saves anything is beyond me, as takes way longer than time and staff it takes to talk to people, to take order & pay.

Same with check out at cashier in chain markets, people looking for, fumbling with the phones and slow apps to pay for shopping.  Just pure silliness.
