Russia's participation in the G7 usually looked like this: Russian representatives waited outside the door on an uncomfortable chair, begged to sit next to others, obediently listened to orders from the rest of the G7
This was a constant humiliation of Russia.
That is why Trump defends America's interests when he says that Russia's exclusion from the G7 club was a mistake.

In hindsight, yes. But at the time it was IMO an honest mistake. Russia, for a brief period in the late 90's, really looked like it could transform into a democracy, something it's tortured people have never experienced in the country's entire history.

Unfortunately, it didn't last and a new dictator emerged. and with absolutely no democratic institutions to fall back on I don't see much hop even when the current snake's head is cut off.
