The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is enforcing penalties on 465 trucks violating low emission zones, aiming to expand this initiative to 50 districts. Over 50,000 vehicles have already registered under the green category.

 

Today, at the Environmental Office in Din Daeng district, Pornprom Vikitset, an advisor to the Bangkok governor, outlined measures against PM2.5 pollution. The low emission zone (LEZ) policy restricts trucks with six or more wheels from entering the Ratchadaphisek ring road unless they are registered as EV, NGV, or EURO 5-6.

 

This policy aims to curb pollution during critical times, such as the recent crisis from January 23 to January 24. Legal proceedings have been initiated against 465 non-compliant trucks, with four cases settled as of June 18.

 

The initiative is part of broader efforts to control truck access to central Bangkok’s inner nine districts. According to Pornprom, the LEZ policy has reduced daily truck entries by an average of 404, decreasing PM2.5 levels by 15.6% compared to other areas.

 

In 2024, the BMA plans to extend the LEZ to 50 districts. From October 1, trucks with six or more wheels can undergo maintenance for compliance, with required documentation for online registration in the green category to be detailed in future announcements.

Forget low emission zones etc. ......... just get them off the roads, any and all roads, and into the breakers' yards.

Sorry, I think that's a silly comment, you'll just have invested in that kind of big truck, it all has to be invested through loans, there could well be 15-year loans against that, and then taking it to the scrap yards?

I think Grusa is referring to the older trucks that give out vast clouds of black smoke due to age and lack of maintenance.

I often wondered why there are so many trucks on the roads in Thailand, where I live. In the West, you seldom see many trucks

Ha, ha, last month I was in the , what you call ‘the West’ and particularly in the Netherlands, and it was precisely there that I was surprised that there was so much freight traffic, and yes, because of a major port in that country, there is extra heavy road freight traffic there, with lots of foreign license plates from all over europe, despite there being good freight connections (the Betuwe line) by train, so it is not all as you wish.
