Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil freed from ICE detention by federal judge

Featured Replies

Khalil, a prominent leader in campus protests over the war in Gaza, was the first high-profile noncitizen activist to be detained as part of a crackdown on alleged antisemitism

June 21, 2025

"Former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil was freed from detention on Friday after a federal judge ordered his release, ruling that the government’s efforts to keep him in custody were highly unusual and potentially a form of punishment for his political views.

Khalil was the first noncitizen activist to be arrested and detained by the Trump administration this year as it launched a crackdown on what it said was antisemitism on college campuses.

...

The judge’s order to release Khalil on bail marks the latest setback for the Trump administration in its pledge to detain and deport what it has termed “pro-jihadist” students, with federal courts delivering a string of defeats to the government in recent weeks."

Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil is released after spending over three months at a Louisiana detention center

June 21, 2025

...

"Wearing a keffiyeh – a scarf seen as a symbol of Palestinian identity and resistance – a grinning Khalil pumped his fists as he walked out of the detention center Friday evening with one of his attorneys.

...

The judge also cited several “extraordinary circumstances” in Khalil’s case that led him to order his release, including “that there is a due process violative effort to punish” the Columbia University graduate who played a central role in negotiations on behalf of pro-Palestinian student protesters last year.

...

Khalil, a lawful permanent resident who is married to a US citizen and has not been charged with a crime, was one of the first arrestees in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown targeting student activism."

What To Know

"Khalil was released on bail shortly before 8 p.m. ET on Friday after U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz concluded he is not a flight risk as he's married to a U.S. citizen, has no criminal record and a baby at home.

...

Speaking to reporters after his release, Khalil said: "Hundreds of men who I left behind me shouldn't have been there in the first place. The Trump administration are doing their best to dehumanize everyone here whether you are a U.S. citizen, an immigrant, or just a person on this land doesn't mean you are less of a human."

...

"There's no right person who should be detained for protesting a genocide, for protesting their university, Columbia University, that is investing in the genocide of the Palestinian people so this is my message."
