Rescue services in Ayutthaya faced an unusual challenge when a large water monitor lizard, over 2 metres in length and weighing more than 30 kilogrammes, was discovered living in the ceiling of a home in Khan Ham subdistrict, Uthai district.

The residents were initially unaware of their unexpected guest, although they had been hearing peculiar noises for several days. At first, the family assumed these sounds were caused by rodents. This changed dramatically when a portion of the ceiling collapsed, revealing the imposing head of the reptile.

Startled by the sight and unsure of how to proceed, the residents quickly called in local rescue services. Upon arrival, the team found the lizard trying to conceal itself within the roof space. The situation required careful handling, as the team delicately expanded the gap in the ceiling to reach and secure the animal.

Using specialised tools, they managed to safely blindfold and secure the lizard by its mouth, ensuring it remained calm throughout the ordeal. It was a painstaking three-hour operation, involving two rescuers to carefully manoeuvre the hefty creature out of the house.

The resolution brought both relief and amusement to the local community. Interestingly, the house number, 15/14, added an element of intrigue. It coincided with a Buddhist holy day and was involved in other mysterious events, sparking chatter among residents. Some believed the lizard’s unexpected visit might bring luck, especially with a lottery draw on the horizon.

This peculiar event has certainly become a talking point in Ayutthaya, blending local superstition with a story of wildlife adventure.
