Exactly. When I was young gays were people to be ridiculed and only accepted if they parodied themselves (like presumed gay comedians) or pretended they weren't gay (closeted). For most kids these days it's not an issue, apart from in some religious communities, particularly in the U.S. and Middle East.

You talk as if trans people have just been included in the gay community. They've actually been part of Pride since the start and were instrumental in initiating the quest for equal rights for gay people. They were actually protesting U.S. police brutality in the fifties but it wasn't until the 1990's that the acronym T became common usage.
