A man has confessed to fatally shooting his ex-wife’s new partner in a violent altercation outside his home, claiming he acted out of fear for his safety following repeated threats and harassment.

Police were called to the village of Ban Noi Hua Khu in Khom Nin Subdistrict, Mueang District, Sakon Nakhon, after reports of a shooting on 29 June. Investigating officer Pol Sub-Lt Thatchaphon Kamthum from Khom Nin Police Station found the body of Mr. Suthat 36, lying in the grass with gunshot wounds to his right ribcage, underarm and a machete wound to the head.

Nearby, officers found a white Toyota Revo pickup truck registered to the victim. The driver’s window had been shattered, and the vehicle was stained with blood. A machete was also discovered in the back of the truck.

The alleged shooter, Mr. Wichai, 41, remained at the scene and surrendered to police without resistance.

According to Mr. Wichai’s statement, the victim had previously been in a relationship with his ex-wife, she then resumed a relationship with the victim after leaving Mr Wichai, with them eventually living together.

Mr. Wichai said he had initially accepted the situation and did not seek retribution, but claimed Mr. Suthat had continued to provoke and threaten him, including making death threats against his family.

On the day of the incident, Mr. Suthat allegedly drove to Mr. Wichai’s home armed with a long machete. Fearing for his life, Mr. Wichai said he retrieved a firearm, which he claims to have found abandoned on a roadside some time ago and fired three shots at the intruder.

Police confirmed that Mr. Wichai was sober at the time of arrest. He has been charged with murder and illegal possession of a firearm, and is now in custody pending further investigation and legal proceedings.
