BANGKOK – In a startling turn of events, a Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck ploughed into the entrance of the Yannawa Police Station, Bangkok.

 

The incident occurred around 11pm last night, when driver Apichai, 36, accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake while turning onto Surasak Road. Thankfully, the crash caused no injuries, though it did result in damage to government property.

 

The investigation swiftly pinpointed the cause: driver error. Apichai admitted to mistakenly pressing the accelerator pedal while attempting to brake. A breathalyser test conducted by traffic police confirmed that alcohol was not a factor, with a reading of 0 milligrams percent reported by KhaoSod.

 

In response to the accident, Apichai was charged with reckless driving leading to damage to government property. He faced a fine of 2,000 baht (approximately US$60), wrapping up this unusual incident with a lighter penalty than it might have been had substances been involved.

Assumption: No driver training - using left foot to brake, right foot to accelerate... ended up wrong foot on wrong pedal ?

... I just don't see sow much a mistake is otherwise possible, but we read of such issues a lot here, usually with a car ending up nose down off a multistory car-park !

Those steps could be mistaken for a zebra crossing in low light and at a glance, no wonder he aimed for that... 

More likely he was drunk or under the influence of something. The vehicle from the photo had to do a 90 degree turn that does not usually happen on a straight road.

I  wonder if he knocked on the door of the station and handed himself in....Probably thought he was at a Mc. Donalds drive thru.
