In a touching yet concerning incident, two young boys attempting to travel across Thailand in search of a missing mother were rescued by authorities after their motorbike ran out of fuel.

Late on the night of 30 June, police officers from Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima Police Station, along with volunteers from Sawang Metta Korat Rescue Foundation, responded to a call about two lost boys stranded near a U-turn in front of a gas station in Ban Don Khwang, Hua Thale subdistrict, Mueang district.

The boys were identified as “Ton”, aged 9, and “Pluem”, aged 13, who had been travelling on an old blue-and-black Honda Wave 100 motorbike with a sidecar. When questioned, Pluem told officers that he and Ton had left their home in Maha Sarakham province two days earlier. With only 80 baht in hand, they had set out to find Pluem’s mother in Chonburi province, a journey of more than 500 kilometres.

The boys admitted they hadn’t eaten properly during the journey, and each night they had slept by the roadside. The journey came to a halt when the motorbike ran out of fuel and a concerned petrol station employee, 22-year-old Mr. Suphanai, found them looking exhausted and hungry.

“I saw them sitting on the motorbike, looking tired and starving, so I asked them what was going on,” Mr. Suphanai said. “When they told me they were heading to Chonburi to find their mum, I was shocked, that’s way too far for children.”

He quickly offered them a meal and contacted local police for help.

Authorities later coordinated with the Nakhon Ratchasima Shelter for Children and Families to provide the boys with a safe place to sleep for the night. They will remain there until their relatives arrive to take them home.
