UPenn ban trans athletes after probe involving swimmer Lia Thomas

1. If common sense and practicality are used, that would be a first! I do like your suggestion that testing only be done if a competitor (or coach?) challenges an athlete. Testing for a Y chromosome would be the likely test. That would mean a lack of one would be a "woman," and the presence of one would be a "man" - except for people with XXY chromosomes. That would either disqualify them from women's sports or necessitate the creation of a special rule for them.
2. Lack of a Y chromosome would certainly qualify someone as a woman, but the presence of a Y chromosome might not (XXY). And would men's sports require a Y chromosome if tested, or would anyone be allowed to compete?

Thanks...

If you think some kind of test needs to take place to know if Mr Thomas should or should not be competing against women may I suggest you visit Specsavers.   Also, the doctor records it on the birth certificate when they observe the sex at birth and since that cannot change then this will be sufficient when they register for the competitive sport they wish to participate in.   "But what if someone fakes their birth certificate".  That is cheating and fraud and should be punished accordingly.

Absolutely disgusting it was ever allowed in the first place.

  • Win for Women, thanks to Donald Trump.

  • The real question is why this required an executive order to begin with?! It’s pathetic! It should’ve been obvious from the get-go!

My opinion is not relevant because I do not have the knowledge to support it. What I do know is that those pushing the anti-trans bigotry do not have all of the facts either.

I don't think this particular issue is anti-trans bigotry.

It's just a question of sexual dimorphism.

Males normal distribution of muscle mass is shifted to the right relative to females.

That means that males in general will have an advantage in almost every competition.

Billiards and chess not so much but pretty much every athletic competition.

So allowing people who were "males at birth" (for want of a better term) to compete in women's sport is patently unfair to the other competitors.

IMHO any argument against this is double-talk.

So, person A believes that the label "woman" should refer only to biological females, while person B believes the label should also apply to males who identify as women, yet the former is "extremely ignorant" and the later is (presumably) enlightened and progressive?

Can you explain this bizarre stance at all?

It’s pretty obvious! There are transgender people in this world who identify as the opposite sex of their biological sex. That’s a fact! And if you don’t want to believe that or think it’s abnormal or whatever then you’re the problem. Live and let die, mate!

Does Thailand let biological males that identify as females compete in women's sports?

I don’t know, but I would assume not, and rightfully so. What I meant by why can’t it be like in Thailand, is acceptance. In Thailand you can be whatever you want and no one bats an eyelid. Only in the west they get all bent out of shape over transsexuals and sexual orientation!

The "test" will be their gender as defined on their driving licence, passport or, if necessary, their birth certificate.

WD Smart: Okay, but my question, and the one I've had in every post I've made on this forum, is "Will they apply these "tests" to EVERTONE, or just certain people? And if just "certain people," how will they determine who will be tested?

Not at all sure what you are on about regarding these "two classifications" unless you really and truly subscribe to the abstruse notion that one's claimed "sexual identity" is the be all and end all of any decision.
WD Smart: I don't claim there are "two classifications." The suggestions on this forum seem to claim there are only two classifications: female and male (or female and "everyone else"). I'm just asking how do you suggest the people in charge of the sport determine which one you belong in.

The rather dim Scottish nationalist government chose to roll with letting people self identify. That got them a whole load of grief when a male sexual predator, who was prosecuted as a male, suddenly "identified" as a female during the court procedures and was sent to a women's prison. And some people get upset when they are denied using the WRONG toilet, just because they are having a Shania Twain episode?
WD Smart: So, a prison is a prison. Why would a women's prison be any better than a man's prison?

WD Smart: The problem with your comment above is you are suggesting we judge someone's gender on their appearance. Do you really want to do that? I'd rather depend on some tests: physical examination, DNA samples, or hormones.

Also, the doctor records it on the birth certificate when they observe the sex at birth and since that cannot change then this will be sufficient when they register for the competitive sport they wish to participate in.   "But what if someone fakes their birth certificate".  That is cheating and fraud and should be punished accordingly.
WD Smart: A doctor, after birth, determines the gender for the birth certificate by looking at the genetalia. I don't know what is done if an examination of the genetalia is inconclusive, and there are people where that is the case. Do they then test their DNA or homones? Or do they just put a "TBD" as the gender classification?

Indeed!

But some members will try to turn the conversation that way.

It is the celebration of women. Get men out of their faces.

I think Penn is back on the right track, and not just track and field.

Still, while in the squash courts, I prefer to mix things up with all kinds of genders.

Penn is one of the greatest school in the continental USA.

It was far better back when I was attending.

Back then, men were men.

And, Penn was Penn.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

I didn't say that there weren't.  I actually said the exact opposite.  Please read replies properly before replying.  You're wasting everyone's time with your silliness.

Yellowtail: Why would anyone have to be tested?
WD Smart: The topic of this forum concerns the banning of a transwomen from competing in women's sports by a university in the USA. It has been suggested by many in this forum that this should be done in all of women's sports. In all of my previous posts, I have asked two things:
- How would this determiation be done?
- Who would it be done to?

Yellowtail: Why would it be up to the people in charge of the sport to make that determination?
WD Smart: The one thing I agree with is that if some kind of disqualification based on gender (or age, or anything else), is made, it should be made by the people in charge of that particular sport. I think, however, it should be doen by those in charge of the entire sports organization, not school by school or team by team.

WD Smart: So, a prison is a prison. Why would a women's prison be any better than a man's prison?

WD Smart: I agree with your conclusion on this. 😉

Again, would anyone have to be tested? Are the people that want to compete claiming they are not trans?

What is the "entire sports organization" that should make such decisions?

Well, it's not my fault that your posts come across a certain way. So don't be surprised if people respond accordingly! And if anyone wastes anyone's times with their silly posts then that's you!
