Rumbling in the Swamp: Quiet Talks Begin to Launch a Viable Third Party in U.S. Politics

Yeah, and they said horseless carriages would never replace horses. It is necessary for a true democracy (the two party system has failed miserably!). Whether it's now or in the future - only time will tell.

The US isn't a 2 party system, it's just other parties never got anywhere. Currently the US has the following parties:

Political parties in Congress

Political parties in state legislatures

Minor parties on the ballot in multiple states

Minor parties on the ballot in one state

How nice.

So 2 main political parties.

The Swamp Creatures in DC will tell you that the US can only be a two-party system.  Well, two party duopoly: one snake, two heads.

They'll insist a third party will never get off the ground.  But - look at Reform UK.  Suddenly the Tories and Labor have competition.

So I can see a totally frustrated electorate moving to vote in a new "Reform US" kind of party.  I will. I'm sick of both US parties.  The US needs a real political change.

Is there already with Maga. There should be room though for a social democrat party. Maga to the right, social democrats to the left and what's left of the democrats+rino's center.

Another reason that the two party system tends to make more sense in the US system. The US doesn't have a parliamentary system. Parties can't formally merge in the US congress.

In other countries they don't formally merge but work together on a plan what strategy to follow to rule the country.

no... as pointed out there are more...at this time congress is made up of only two of those parties, other parties could hold seats just nobody in another party has ran for and been voted into congress.

The United States desperately needs more mainstream national political parties to create a proper multi-party democracy, so this is a good start. The best part, provided it takes off, is it will split the conservative/republican vote. While I'm no fan of the democrats either (who abandoned their working class base during Bill Clinton's time in exchange for promoting hollywood weirdos, pop stars and others with no connection to how most people live), there needs to be a further creation - a Progressive Party of America or something like that. Call it a Bernie Sanders or OAC style of social democracy, that would represent the views of millions of Americans.

It would be a bit like France, where there are a few mainstream leaders running for presidency and ultimately a run-off second ballot to get the final winner. In my view, that would be a much better system than the military-industrial-political K-Street dominance of deep pocket lobbyists and money politics that dominates the U.S. system at the expense of ordinary, common sense thinking voters.

This won't work brought to you by the older generation. Out of touch with what the average youngan wants in their politicians now.

..Regarding K-Street lobbyists, I haven't seen much coming out of Trump's piehole about special-interest lobbyists, other than his obvious full-throated pro-zionist backing. Has the NRA been effective with its lobbying or any other others (oh, yeah, Trump's, BBB including the ending a tax of 'firearm silencers' - what?). Of course the main playbook seems to be Project 2025, which I guess is an amalgamation of all the right wing lobbyists and their wish lists. What about the processed food industry, or shipping industry, others..

Maybe all this MAGA double/triple-talk will shake things up, but in the post-WWII era in the US a third party serves as none other than a spoiler.

1968  (?)

1992

2000

In the 1990s word started going around that Gene McCarthy's 1968 run as "the 'stop the war' candidate was a set-up by the GOP.

In 1992 Ross Perot got 19% of the popular vote but carried 0 states.  Personally, I thought he would start a new party for future, but he seemed to disappear from politics.

In 2000 Nader got less than a million votes but was effective.

DT's approval rating has never gone below the 30-35% range.  Don't count on any news knocking those numbers down.  But MAGA without DT might just might.

But maybe EM can cause such a schism in the GOP that the sitting invertebrates will stand up to DT's threats of being primaried out and this new party becomes new guise of the GOP.  I doubt it.

All the sudden we need a new system because the left did not get their way.

I think we have a great political system.

Elon has about as much pull with MAGA as Liz Cheney. The only difference it, they like Elon.

Proved in many other countries.

Because not enough people vote for them. We have more than two parties.

I notice you did not quote my entire post (I did elaborate)
1) this not not about the political systems in other countries
2) the US system is winner take all
2) whichever main party (GOP/DEM) is more fractured by a 3rd party will lose the election

3) it is highly unlikely that an America Party will win an election

IMHO, Elon will lose, the GOP will lose and the party Elon campaigned against will win.

This is what I meant by a 3rd party will not work.

My assumption is different from yours. The 3rd party will have a huge impact on US politics

The Libertarian Party is the third biggest party, followed by the Green Party.

The Reform Party almost surely cost Bush the election in '92, and I think one could argue the Green Party cost Gore the election in 2000 and Clinton the election in 2016.

Can't compare the existing parties with this new one. This is Elon's party with unlimited money and social media behind.

Believe what you like, but Musk does not have unlimited money, nor does he have social media behind him.

Musk was not even able to get a judge elected in Wisconsin.

I am pretty sure he is sorry for helping Trump get elected.

Just waiting for him to admit the election was rigged, hate is a very powerful motivator.

Trump and Elon will keep trying to outdo each other, remember Elon was celebrated when he headed DOGE.

Will his grands and subsidies be in jeopardy?

Better stock up on popcorn.

If Elon was going to be sorry for anything, it would be for buying twitter.

I imagine Elon is still happy Trump got elected, and a lot of people still love DOGE.

Maybe a third party a good idea but Elon Musk :cheesy:

Also if successful it would split the vote and probably lead to even more chaos in the already tightly split  USA Government

Yes a lot of people (still) love DOGE.

I am thinking that will change once people realize it will hurt their wallet and make their lives more diiifcult

Let 's just see what will happen.

MAGA will have to chose between Elon and Trump, you can not serve two masters.

Both guys will be like a duck in the water.

You can only hope. I have not seen anything that will hurt people's wallet and make their lives more difficult, and I check it most every day. It seems to me to be the contrary.
