Thais rarely exercise. They ride motorbikes everywhere. More sugar and breads everywhere.

They don't understand what's unhealthy, i ask them, they often think rice, when they've been slim for 1000 years on rice.   Obesity and 7 Eleven growth probably very similar on a graph

  • It's probably the ultra processed food that hijacks the brain at a very young age. It's really a worldwide problem where the cheapest food available is the worst for their health.   I was in

Lots of fat monks. They eat lots of rice, less sweets. Lots of sitting around.

Really sad seeing the young men developing breasts.

On the bright side...if they later become ladyboys they won't have to pay for silicone.

Love these threads about why Thais are so fat by farangs who are fatter and come from countries with higher obesity rates than Thailand.

Like the topics about Thais being immature or stupid. Same thing.

Nothing strange about that, we've been there and seen the problem a long time ago.

Deep fried chicken, deep fried hotdogs, deep fried Rotti's, deep fried bananas. Thai food is cooked with oil and oily fried eggs on top. Oils in all the bread snacks at 7-11. There's palm oil in so many foods and cheap oily food is so easier to find here.

Sugars are the main reason people get fat

This is what people think who don't understand nutrition. There's fruitarians who only eat sugar in fruit and are very slim, often too slim.

I eat loads of carbs and sugar, slim

exercise alone won'take someone slim, food and drink is 80% of it

One of first Thai Phrases I learned was "no sweet". I still cannot believe so many of the drinks have added sugar syrup.  I mean even fruit smoothies have added sugar syrup not to mention many of the coffee drinks.  One can even overdue healthy foods like fruit.  I stopped eating most Thai foods years ago because I suspected there was added sugar.

Lots of junk food contain both.

Hopefully by now people realise junk food includes both plus salt often

That's what I posted and I understand nutrition very well. I've been into the exercise and nutrition scene for over 50 years, and have stayed slim because I learned a long time what to eat and what not to .

Nothing much has changed over the years besides the addition of a few fad diets and some that are temporary fixes.

Yes, of course, a person can eat natural fruits and vegetables in any quantity and never get fat, because they are both filling and low calorie.

The reasons people get fat are always the same. Too much processed food with added sugar and oils, meaning fried. Not enough activity also hurts even those who have faster metabolisms, over time. Everyone has their own metabolism there by genetics. Some are lucky and get away with eating crap all their lives, until it catches up with them with internal problems.

The Keto starves the body of sugar, and has stored body fat burned as energy, but not eating fiber after awhile will cause problems in the digestive system.

A person has to see how their body handles calories, and adjust accordingly, especially if they like tasty food that has a lot of calories. Eating a healthy diet all your life gives you breathing room so you can splurge on not so healthy food occasionally, but it shouldn't be a main part of your lifestyle. People love food, and without knowledge on nutrition, they'll gain weight every year, until they get to a point where they are obese and have to change their lifestyle around to get permanent results. What you eat, especially if it's a lot of sugar, will eventually backfire even if you've been getting along fine with it a long time.

I see this when I go into an Amazon's or other coffee shops. Only a few like Starbucks and an occasional Amazon has sugar substitutes like equal or Stevia, so I carry my own when I know I'll be near them. They do have three types of sugar and milk, including sweetened condensed, carnation, which is added into most drinks when you don't say anything.

They probably think it's because of free visa, but i guess it's really because of kanom and not to mention sweet nom

When im in thailand i stick with beer water black coffee and unsweetened tea and i manage not to gain much weight. I think the sugar drinks are the main reason behind thailands weight gain

The prevalence of Type 1 diabetes in the UK is about 0.3% higher than in Thailand.

For Type 2 diabetes, the difference is larger, with Thailand having approximately 4.1% more cases than the UK.

Not sweet means medium sweet to a Thai. You have to say no sugar.

Yeah i have loads of it because of exercise, make my own electrolyte, half teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons sugar, ginger lemongrass water, the bananas i eat adds potassium

Lack of awareness and wrong incentives..

Our niece 16 years, is close to 80 kilos. Grew up with Grandma. Whenever relatives, her mother, her brothers are visiting: "ohooo you are fat" - Grandmother gets the very proud look on her face "See, i took really good care nah?"

Subjecting her to a lifetime of ridicule. Possible pre diabetic and going into adulthood overweight which is hard to reverse as the habit is already established.

Just like most everything else it is only good for you in moderation!

They eat far too much. People in issan have limited money and so they eat things they pick themselves like mushrooms. When they get more money they eat just as much food but it's all unhealthy garbage.

The exponential increase in western fast foods, when I first came to Thailand it was a real struggle to find any western food and it was rare to see a Thai chub, just look at them now.

My first visit was in 2004.  15 trips since.  Last trip was 2019.  Oh yes many many more overweight Thais and here in the USA same here.  Processed foods, soda! Fast food, KFC, McD's etc.  I get it, I have done it.  And as monies get tighter people eat cheaper which means more fast food, microwave Tyons chicken fingers etc.  The amount of salt and sugar and high fructose corn syrup (whatever that is) .

yep.  heck my mother in her 80s when I would visit and we all would eat, she would say "good boy, you ate it all"!  sheesh!

7-11 has 15 million customers EVERY DAY in Thailand.  Nearly a quarter of the population eating at least something from a 7-11 every single day.

The stock of 7-11s is determined by computers tracking what sells.  And if you look at what's on the shelves its almost all cheap carbs.  Either processed corn or potato snacks or sugary drinks or ready meals that are mostly rice or the toasties that are cheap bread and mayo and ketchup with some cheap processed meat.

When I first came to Thailand in the early 90s Thais added salt to fresh fruit juice drinks.  Which was a good idea as most of them worked in the heat.  Now, as many have pointed out, Thais commonly add extra sugar to fruit juices.

I also found back then that every Thai, especially every woman, had an encyclopedic knowledge of what plants and herbs were good for nutrients.  It wasnt uncommon for Thais to just start gathering leaves if we were stopped somewhere while travelling around as they'd spotted something known to be healthy to eat.  I even saw this in a group of university professors, so it wasnt just a rural farmer thing.  I'd be surprised if young people today have the same knowledge of nutritional values of traditional and locally available foods.

Thais have always hated walking, even in the early 90s walking more than 50 meters was only done when there were absolutely no other options!`

Sucessive leaderships haven't helped with war on street foods, and an increase in western food chain restaurants.

This is a thread filled with white supremacy.   It’s nothing but a much of fat white males calling the brown people fat.
