I see this old boy every day and this morning on my walk I see him with this horrible hole. 

 

Any idea if this is an injury or infection? 

 

Poor guy. Wanted to take him to a vet but am being (probably wisely) overruled by bosslady and inlaws to avoid any drama with the sort-of-kind-of "owner."

 

Assume this will be fatal even with medical intervention due to inevitable infection. 

 

Thoughts?

Yea kinda leaning toward that as well because the fur around it would probably be intact if it was an injury/attack. For the first few seconds my mind went pretty dark and I thought maybe some cnt took a screwdriver to him.

 

It's an old, always very happy and nice pooch. Sad morning.....

Looks like it 

I've seen a lot worse and the dog survived without intervention 

Maggots or something. They have powder for that at the vet store.
