Trump's Tariff Troubles: Thai Academic Sounds Alarm on Key Issues

That's good info, but all I see is food.  How about the 80% tariff on cars, added to the other fees that basically triple the landed cost of a US car into Thailand?

It may be but remember that Thailand has many car factories, why anyone would want to own an American made car?

Whenever an academic criticizes President Trump I just remember they are an academic.  The entire "ivory tower" crowd hates Trump and will say anything to tear him down,  It's part of their culture.

Do Thai factories make Corvettes, Mustangs, Chargers and F250's?

These cars only make sense in the context of "Americana" which for most Thais mean nothing.

Slight exaggeration I believe its 80% .

I think he might be referring to private imports of vehicles which is typically between 200/300%

And your point would be?

Mate, before making a bigger fool of yourself, and commenting on a reply to someone else, first se who and what I replied to...it just might make sense, well, at least to most people... obviously you are not part of the "most."

Yet we see Ferraris, Lambos and Bentleys all over Thailand.

They could probably wipe out half the trade imbalance if they allowed Thai (and expat) drivers to buy Vettes and F250s in Thailand at fair prices.

Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean they wouldn't be wildly popular.  And as a bonus, they wouldn't be competing directly with any indigenous Thai vehicles.  Thai factories make nothing like a Vette.

Sure, but at the same time USA consumers will buy less goods coming from Thailand, since the price they have to pay has been jacked up, so Thailand sees its exports to the USA shrinking.

Tariffs = pain on both sides

At least in the near-medium term (ie several years) for the USA, if they manage to eventually replace the goods with home-manufactured / produced goods. Which leads to one caveat: imposing tariffs only make sense if there is concurrently a well-thought plan to build up one's manufacturing / producing base. Which I doubt very much is the case with Trump.

And certainly, no plan can ever replace coffee or diamonds!

True, but I wasn't replying that..it was to someone else's comment

The import duty is 80%, but the other taxes pile on to 200% to over 300%.  Airalee's great post above 'splains the confusion.

Who said Thais are not allowed to drive US cars?

Ferraris, lambo's and Bentleys are a complete different class than US cars

Nah. I disagree. I can think of a lot of old school Americans that were tough, but they were decent, they may have been harsh, they may have been very direct, but they had some respect, they had some dignity. This man is a scam artist and a circus clown, he doesn't have a nanogram of dignity, he has respect for no one but himself, and he would throw his own family members under the bus if he could profit from it.

I just dont see the scam!

You missed that part about "at fair prices".

According to Airalee's post above, a $100K Vette would land in Thailand at a cost of $428K.

You missed the part that Ferraris, lambos and Bentleys are subject to the same import taxes, and cost more than double what US junk cost.

So why they buy those cars and not a Vette at half the price?

Maybe they like Detroit muscle instead of an Italian car guaranteed to spend most of its time in the shop.

Besides, if you follow the news, it seems most of those Italian jalopies come in illegally.  I doubt they're paying duties or taxes.

One thing is certain. He is accomplishing very little, he will NOT bring manufacturing back to America, which is stupid over priced (I am here now and inflation is raging at 20% or higher right now), he is causing alot of pain, he is losing support, destroying businesses, and consumer confidence, he does not have a coherent plan, and he is a destructive nimwit.

It is about showing what he can get away with. It’s about showing his enemies that what they support, he can tear down. It is all about displays of brute strength. He gets off on that, and in that sense, it seems not so much an autocracy but a flexocracy. Let me show you how I can flex my bicep as I use it to power my fist coming into your face.

Trump’s idea of power. If I can destroy, if I can defile and march on relatively unscathed and unpunished, that makes me powerful. Other people can’t get away with it, but that’s how dominant and superior I am.

His tariffs are not causing your so called inflation according to the CEA (Council of Economic Advisors). Although they are an arm of the gov't you hate so much! With regard to your other opinions, absolute rubbish.

I've never seen one of the aforementioned motors in Thailand in the last 30 years. They are known to be unreliable.

And there are official dealerships of those cars in Thailand.

That's a good thing, for the majority of time they're in the shop.  Probably waiting on parts.  From Italy.  Or Dubai.

The US presents the tariff as a remedy for its ongoing trade deficit with Thailand, and it is not merely a matter of international trade. Dr. Suriyasai points out that it involves deep strategic negotiations that could potentially reshape Thailand’s economic structure, production base, labour force, and policy sovereignty. He stresses the importance of understanding that these discussions transcend the immediate trade deficit narrative.

When the Thai economy tanks, blame it on Trump!

If I cared one iota about your opinion then your insult would be offensive, but since I don't it's not.

It makes sense that it's going to take some time for the impact of these tariffs to filter down into the economy, so just wait. I predict inflation is going to rise rather dramatically.

Secondarily I don't trust these government agencies who come out with these inflation numbers anyway, as they use a fairly ridiculous basket of commodities that have nothing to do with our daily lives. However I do trust my wallet, and when I'm on the ground in the US my wallet says that inflation is at a fairly staggering level right now.

If you can't see that Trump has spent his entire career scamming people, if you don't believe the history, the testimonies, the lawsuits, and the reality, there's absolutely nothing that I can say to you to convince you.

It is quite obvious you you simply haven't done your research and you have been consuming way too much MAGA Kool-Aid.

Nobel-prize-winning economists (and many others) are using that example. Maybe they have no understanding of global trade.

Read this: https://time.com/7274651/why-economists-are-horrified-by-trump-tariff-math/

You might learn something.

Example of global trade-America isn't the only market.

On June 30, 2025, Canada did the unthinkable: it cut off its daily 8.8 billion cubic feet gas flow to the US, a supply once worth $8 billion a year, and instead Canada Cuts US Gas, and Trump Furious as Shipments Head to China, Japan, South Korea.

Dear Thailand,

Drop your tariffs on US goods, level the playing field, the US will drop tariffs on Thailand good, and you're back in business.
or
Whine, cry, whimper, and bi*ch about how you can no longer levy tariffs on US goods without a reciprocal tariff being levied on Thai goods.
:crying: "Boo hoo - it's unfair!"
What's unfair about a level playing field?  Get over it.  You don't get to bend the United States over a stump and have your way with them regarding US imports anymore.  Learn to compete on the world stage. Btw, your citizen benefit by having cheaper imported goods.

Some of that was returned to consumers through tax cuts, most of which will benefit the highest earners.

In addition consumers are losing their jobs, financial safety nets, and medical aide. When you add these loses to the 5% redistribution to the elow to average income maker there is a NET LOSS! But billionaires can buy another villa, yacht, Ferrari, a private island, etc.

You really believe that?

Maybe you should have a word with Vietnam, who dropped their tariffs on US goods to ZERO %, and agreed to order more US products as well, yet they got hit with a 20% tariff by the clown in the US
