Bangkok Dining Costs Surge: Eating Out a Luxury for Many

Millions upon millions of Thais outside Bangers are earning the minimum wage or less or nothing at all.

But prices are lower too outside the 3 or 4 largest cities. Here in Prasat Surin province my b/f and I yesterday had dinner at a wayside shack after our round-the-lake 5-times rapid walk. Delicious pad thai enclosed in omelette plus 2 bottles of chilled water: total price 154฿.

Seems about right, Bht 60 for Pad Thai, and Bht 17 for the waters.

13 years? Try since Covid. Pad kra pao moo sap kai dao was Bt35-40 before covid and is now Bt50-60. Sure it might not have doubled but IMHO the last 5 years is when prices really started going up.

I have stopped going to Bangkok since the Chinese Virus because of the price of restaurants and hotels, I just bypass and go down to Pattaya, it's much cheaper all round.

I think we are finding in all districts outside Bangkok, where people are on much lower wages and more price-conscious, that what sellers are doing to make ends meet is cutting down on portion sizes.

Lots of rice and almost no protein or vegetables, and meats are usually low quality. It's the one thing I hate about Thai cooking done here in Thailand, at least back home in the states my wife cooked Thai dishes that were loaded with quality meats and vegetables. I could eat better Thai food in the US than I can here, it's pathetic, and should be embarrassing for Thailand.

The reaction? Utter denial. A pile-on of abuse like I’d fabricated the whole thing. Apparently, pointing out the obvious now makes you public enemy number one.

Funny how people are only just waking up to the cost-of-living squeeze — something I've been saying for years. Suddenly it’s “I can’t afford lunch!” and “Groceries are extortionate!” Really? No kidding.

Meanwhile, here at home in Thailand, we’ve got both a Thai and a Western kitchen. A full outdoor BBQ setup. Every pan, burner, and cutting board imaginable.

And not one of them — not one — lifts a finger to cook. Why? Because I pay for everything. So they don't have to. It's not poverty. It’s not lack of time. Likewise, it’s not even lack of skill. It’s sheer, unfiltered bone idleness.

And yes — I’ve pointed it out. Many times. What do I get in return? Blank stares and passive resistance, like I’ve just suggested they take up coal mining.

Let me tell you — I’m 63. Not exactly from the Victorian era. Raised in a big UK family. My mum was widowed when I was just 18 months old. She worked an 8-hour factory shift every day and still managed to prep and cook dinner for seven kids. Not UberEats. Not takeaways. Real food. Real effort.

By the time I joined the Royal Navy, I could already cook, wash, iron, and sew — because in our house, you had to know how to survive. And guess what? Those skills came in bloody useful.

We’ve gone from self-reliance to self-entitlement in a single generation. Somewhere along the way, personal responsibility became optional. Now, people treat “preparing your own lunch” like it’s a hardship on par with indentured servitude.

And before anyone gets defensive — this isn’t about wealth. It’s about attitude. If my mother could feed eight on a widow’s wage, there’s no excuse for a household full of able-bodied adults staring at a stocked fridge like it’s a museum exhibit.

Wake up. This isn't just a financial crisis — it's a cultural one.

I've found very few Thai dishes prepared here, that I would praise, most is just slop.

That's quite an exaggeration, and it's way too much over egging the pudding.

Nah,

There are fantastic dishes, unfortunately, you do' get them in street stalls as the emphasis is on cheap with an abundance of unhealthy oil.

True. My girlfriend is a very good cook, and she makes things for me not so spicy, as she and her sons loves very hot. My ex wife and her mom are also good cooks. The many times I've eaten out here have mostly been okay. Some pretty bad and some very good. The best Thai food I've had, besides mentioned, has been in restaurants in New Jersey and Texas, those done by people from Thailand with more quality control and cleanliness to keep with the laws there. The green curry my girlfriend makes is almost the same as Thai Spice and Sushi's in the San Antonio area. They're from Korat.

Thai food, done properly, is among the best worldwide, along with Italian, Spanish, Greek, Japanese, Indian, French, Vietnamese, Pizza and American.

Done properly, being the issue, and with quality ingredients. I especially hate pork belly fat, most disgusting piece of "meat" I can think of, my wife uses pork tenderloin in all her pork dishes.

The only time I ever ate pork was when I shot a deer and had sausage made. Then I moved here and now I eat it, mostly at my girlfriends. She buys ground and tenderloin, which I prefer as it has less fat. When I move back to Texas, out goes the pork, as I usually eat chicken, seafood, beef and venison. I even take the skin off the chicken as it has most of the fat. Pork belly, eaten fried in Texas as Chicharrones, might taste good but not for me.

Agreed, I don't eat pork often, I prefer chicken/turkey/steak/fish (though a good steak outside of Texas is hard to find), and like you, I don't eat the skin on chicken either. Plus I can't even find ground turkey here, which sucks.

No ground turkey, which I ate 3x a week in Texas. Just ground chicken, which isn't too bad. I eat it in burgers, stir fried then added to pasta with sauce, and my girlfriend uses it in vegetable soup, which is really good. Turkey does taste better.

Shocking.

Deer....venison.

Pig....pork.

You need pork added because Venison is too dry, especially when making ground Venison.

No, there are quite a  few more. I just listed some of the most liked.

That would be venison and pork sausage or venison sausage with pork.

Venison sausage is made with just venison....unless you are from the USA.

Thanks, but totally irrelevant to the conversation. It's about Bangkok and the cost of eating out. Rather than you telling us that you shot a deer.

I'm from the US. Venison sausage is also made from potatoes, veal, and other fillers, including spices. Fat, mainly pork fat, or lean, is used as it makes the best flavored sausage. Sausage without fat isn't really sausage, though some might think it is.

Then why did you join the conversation commenting on my post, which was directed at Lordgrinz?

Because I joined to read about people's experiences in Bangkok. Rather than you hijacking yet another thread to make it all about you.

Bangkok experiences if you please.

We were having a conversation. You felt you needed to police our conversation. It isn't any of your business so stay out.    When two are conversing, it isn't hijacking because we are talking about food, which is part of the conversation here.

No. The conversation is about Bangkok and the price of food. If you want to take it off-topic with regard to the USA and you shooting deer, start your own thread or go to PM. Thank you.

Tell me, why aren't you telling this to Lordgrinz? I know why.............
