A striking accusation has emerged from Ubon Ratchathani, as a Thai man claims his adoptive father, an abbot, sexually assaulted him, pushing him to flee and find refuge with his girlfriend.

The drama unfolded around Anan, the abbot of Wat Pa Dan Hin Phong, who appealed to Channel 8, alleging his adoptive son, Crepe, had been kidnapped by Fon, a woman he accused of having sinister motives. Anan organised an ordination for Crepe in June and intended to move him to his own temple. However, come July, Crepe vanished.

Anan accused Fon of coercing Crepe to forsake his monkhood, alleging her intentions were malicious, and soliciting media aid in finding him. Meanwhile, Channel 8 made contact with Crepe, now settled with Fon and her family. Contrary to Anan’s claims, Crepe insists nobody forced him to leave the monastic life.

Crepe revealed disturbing allegations, citing enduring sexual abuse by Anan. He stated Anan’s advances, under the guise of typical father-son affection, became intolerable. Crepe revealed that Anan tried to engage in more explicit acts, which Crepe fortunately evaded.

Monk Kwanjai, who officiated Crepe’s disrobing, corroborated Crepe's autonomy in leaving monkhood, countering Anan’s narrative. Kwanjai shared a heated recording in which Anan lamented the disrobing without his consent, raising an issue over the significant financial investment of 400,000 to 500,000 baht (approximately 383,000 to 479,000 Thai Baht) he made in Crepe’s ordination.

Channel 8’s news director, Phutthaapiwan “Phut” Ongprabaramee, intervened, advocating for Crepe’s autonomy and prompting authorities to address the grave allegations. As this complex saga unfolds, the calls for thorough investigation and justice grow louder.

The case highlights deep-rooted issues within their relationship and raises pressing questions about power dynamics in religious institutions. The story continues to captivate public attention, with many awaiting the outcome and potential interventions from legal and religious bodies.
