UK 220 MPs Demand Keir Starmer Recognise Palestinian Statehood

Over a third of UK MPs are urging Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to officially recognise a Palestinian state. In a bid to send a "powerful" message and advance the two-state solution, 220 MPs from nine political factions have signed the letter—more than half of them Labour representatives. This movement puts pressure on Starmer following France's recent commitment to recognise Palestinian statehood within months.

 

Sir Keir’s recent interactions with French President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Friedrich Merz reflect cautious diplomacy. Starmer's statement underlined the fact that recognition must be part of a broader strategy towards a two-state solution. His focus, alongside key international allies, is on establishing enduring peace through practical solutions.

 

Starmer has emphasised the urgency of a ceasefire, which aims to deliver humanitarian support to Palestinians. He stated that recognition might feature in the peace roadmap but insists it must be within a larger framework ensuring long-term stability for both Palestinians and Israelis. On Friday, he pledged to facilitate urgently needed aid and evacuation for children requiring medical help.

 

A joint statement from the UK, France, and Germany did not directly mention statehood but expressed readiness to support a ceasefire and political process. Criticism of the Israeli government was also voiced, citing aid restrictions and the humanitarian plight in Gaza as untenable. The statement reiterated that Hamas must be disarmed and excluded from Gaza’s future.

 

This cross-party letter follows a coalition of 27 countries condemning the dire situation and the restricted aid inflicted on Palestinians. Israel, which controls supply entries to Gaza, refutes allegations of a siege and attributes civilian suffering to Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry dismissed the coalition’s critique as disconnected and misleading regarding Hamas.

 

Labour MP Sarah Champion, spearheading the letter, argues that recognising Palestine will align with a longstanding cross-party consensus in Parliament. Champion and her colleagues believe British recognition would be a powerful gesture given the UK’s historical ties to the region.

 

The letter includes signatures from various party leaders and MPs, urging the recognition of statehood as a critical step toward peace. Parliament has previously seen motions supporting this stance, notably a 2014 non-binding motion passed with substantial backing, reported BBC.

 

Sceptics warn that without resolving the scope and leadership of a Palestinian state, recognition could remain symbolic. While 139 nations officially acknowledge Palestinian statehood, many Western countries await broader peace agreements before doing so. Recent examples include Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which recognised Palestine, hoping to leverage diplomatic pressure to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.

 

The United Nations accords limited privileges to Palestinian representatives, and numerous international bodies, such as the Arab League, recognise the territory. Nonetheless, certain quarters argue that a recognition without resolving core issues may not tangibly alter the ground situation.

I'll start be assuming this Palestinian State is Gaza.  I'll look at this again when this place ceases to be run by terrorists.  Release the hostages, put the terrorists in jail: that'll be a start.  Then hopefully the civilian Palestinians can get fed and watered properly, they can start to rebuild, get international recognition and support, and never again will terrorists do what they did on Oct 7th and never again shall a rocket be fired at civilians or civilians get killed by Israeli troops.

 

The last part seems open to debate as there's no independent media covering what's happening on the ground in Gaza and I trust neither side's propaganda to be completely accurate.

Yes, great idea to recognise a Palestinian state run by Hamas terrorists (voted for by its people) who carried out the worst massacre ever and still hold a lot of hostages (dead and alive). Three of those hostages, a mother and two infants were cold-bloodedly strangled by the monsters. A people who nearly toppled the state of Jordan and who no other mulsim country will allow inside their borders. Macron and these British MPs are very sick people. By the way, they already have a state, it's called Gaza. They made a complete cow's asre of that, didn't they.

They only wanted it if Israel disappeared, and that is never going to happen. The Arabs were never interested in a 2 state solution only one, there own. Just rename Gaza Palestine.
