Problems after Sleep on New Desktop.

desktop loses the internet after it has been on sleep all night

A common cause for a desktop losing its internet connection after sleep is that power-saving features in Windows may be disabling the network adapter. To fix this, you can adjust power management settings for your network adapter to prevent it from being turned off during sleep.

Here's a more detailed explanation and troubleshooting steps:
Understanding the Problem:
  • Power Saving:
Windows has power-saving features designed to conserve energy, including turning off devices like network adapters when not in use.
  • Sleep Mode:
When a computer goes into sleep mode, it often disables power to certain components to save energy, including potentially the network adapter.
  • Re-enabling:
When waking from sleep, the network adapter may not be immediately re-enabled, causing a temporary or permanent loss of internet connection.

Troubleshooting Steps:
  1. 1. Adjust Power Options:
    • Open the Control Panel and go to Power Options.
    • Click on Change plan settings for your current power plan.
    • Click on Change advanced power settings.
    • Expand Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode and set it to Maximum Performance for both "On battery" and "Plugged in".

    • Click Apply and OK.
    • Restart your computer.

  • I shut down my laptop and desktop overnight. Never had a problem.   But then, I have a Linux OS on both.   IMO anyone with a Windows OS is paying to have problems.

Seems like my Win 10 is 40% slower after Norton 360 did a major upgrade a couple of months ago.   One day I will stop being lazy and switch to a new virus/vpn/computer protection software.

Their VPN also slows down internet downloads, at least on my Lenovo IdeaPad Flex, U.S. of A. version.

For God sake get rid of Norton!! It will kill pour PCs speed! I have no Antivirus on my PCs...only Windows defender that have done a very good job for me for years. Avast is also something you want to avoid!

Me too, no virus or problems since avast and Norton ditched more than 5 years back.

And to then do a restart which should be done once a week and then shut down on completion.

Errrmmm... A cold BOOT 😉. You don't need to restart after restarting 😭

Re read my post above.  If you are doing the recommended weekly restart rather than a daily shut down then you will need to follow that restart with a shut down when finished for the day.

You don't need that. Total bloat. I bet it's 2gn installed lol

MS Defender is fine. Lightweight as well.

I don't know what "2gn" is, but thanks for the advice.

I am looking for a vpn that would work for me too.   Norton vpn is crap too.

Any suggestions for a vpn?

It did.  Computer runs slower, especially after the major upgrade.

I stopped keeping up on computer issues when I retired over a decade ago.  Back then I had to.   I set up and ran remote communication devices controlled by computers through the internet.   Now, just the computers in the house.

You and KhaoHom agree on the "MS" windows defender.   I don't know too much about it.   I need to study up on it to make sure that it is set up properly, if it needs setup, when I get rid of norton 360.

I always set my Dell pc in sleep mode and I don’t have any problems accessing internet.

Go :

Control Panel (on your left screen down write :Control Panel if you cant find it

When control panel menu open go :

Change settings, adapters or Internet adapters

You will find :

1.Ethernet

2.Wi fi

With your mouse : Right click and choose :  Enable / disable in order to de energize disable temporarly pc adapters

Afterwards do it again Enable / disable in order to Connect making Enable again your pc adapter

The problem will be solved.

Defender is set up automatically provided you have no other anti virus programme loaded.

Defender can be disabled manually but is not something you can do by accident so if no other Anti Virus installed all should be well!

You can get a free VPN from Proton VPN. Its fast and works well. Reduced servers of course, but it all comes down to what you need.
