This extract copy from the OP's post clearly indicates that it's not a 1 off reading.

Been on Amlopine best part of 10 years  but systolic stays mainly around 150. Diastolic been gradually working down from 80 for a few years.

You can only interpret that 1 way. His systolic stay mainly around 150 for the best part of the 10 years he's been on Amlopine, and his diastolic has been gradually decreasing from 80 for a few years.

You can only interpret that 1 way

Obviously not

Not really if it is a once off reading. Follow it for a week, every day at the same time and don't speak during the procedure. Always rest before at least 5 minutes.

Good points. I hope Dr Sheryl might add some valid points.

I similar experience with two Thai veterinarians. I didn't realize there were cultural aspects to this, but they definitely did not like being questioned. It was simply buy the pills they were selling and follow orders.

Doctors in the West don't like to be questioned either. Either follow their protocol and buy the pills or stop seeing the doctor and solve the problem yourself.

iHerb has a blood pressure formulation. One way it works is by increasing blood flow, I believe. If your levels are dangerously high, go to a doctor. But if not, you can experiment with this to see if it comes down. Or if you trust pharmaceuticals more, then ignore my post.

I had a triple bypass a few years ago and was fitted with a defib. I moniter my B/P pressure a few times a week and its aways Different For peace of mind when i visit my Doctor or the nurse for my blood check ups i always ask for a B/P check.

Why would you have to ask, 100% of the time I have gone to a doctor it always gets done before the doctor will see you.

I had 2 stents fitted in 2006, and I take my BP twice a day using an Omron A2. I take 5 readings at a time at a time and discard any that are obviously too high or too low.

I have a spreadsheet that I log in daily and my average BP for July 2025 is,

Systolic      106 to 129

Diastolic    60 to 81

Heartbeat 69 to 100

I am now 81 and I have been off my BP meds for a couple of years, having taken the doctors advice first.

Thanks for the replies and interest, the 150 is not a one off. the diastolic has  been a gradual lowering. Age er between the two figures quoted. I suppose a doctor visit is in order.

My blood pressure is finally stable, last two dr office readings were 124/76 and 110/73. Im old fat and lazy. Im using metropolol and 10/160 Exforge. It took about 3 years to get those numbers there with correct meds, went through a lot of combos. I use. Dr. Jiranut at BNH Cardiometabolic Center in Bangkok

This is not medical advice.

A systolic reading of 150 is to be treated as a serious risk for a heart related event or stroke. You need to see a cardiologist. I am 70 and have had 1 heart attack due to generational family history. I have been on statins since 1996 as well as Omacore. I am the longest living male member of my family. I am also the only one that has never had bypass operations. I recommend you purchase a blood pressure monitor for home use. Omron is reasonable priced and accurate. Take a reading upon waking after relaxing and seated after 3-5 minutes. There are many free phone apps to keep a record of your systolic, diastolic, and pulse.

The reading at the doctors office will almost always be higher due to a number of factors. I took mine this morning and I am still over my goal at 127/66 with a pulse of 60. A key to managing is eating correctly, exercise, very little alcohol (I might have a beer 1x per month. Strength training is important but at 150 I would get a cardiologists opinion before starting on any program. Walking is excellent at ideally 6000-10000 per day or at least 4 days per week. Again speak with your doctor.

Periodic blood tests will help you gain a measure of indicative control over the  cause and effect of changes to your lifestyle. I have seen a remarkable or rather incredible reduction in my triglyceride levels after taking Omacore (OTC Omega 3 esters) for a while.

I was treated excellently at Bumrungrad for the minor heart attack but left due to my doctor's arrogance and impatience during my queries.

I have since changed doctors and really enjoy my current cardiologist Dr. Apichai Pongpatananurak at Samitivej Sukhumvit. If you think you require more individual care then you may want to see him. A number of Thai physicians aren't very receptive to interaction and act in a hierarchical manner. They know and you don't. Dr. Apichai doesn't operate that way. I have validated his protocols and I am satisfied with his advice, protocols, and results.

Best of luck and don't wait to see a Dr.

A lot of nonsense. Don't frighten other people with your own fate. Between 70-80 your blood pressure could be easily rise to 140-150. That's not alarming.

Don't forget, you're not an expert

To make sure your readings are correct.

Go and have your blood pressure tested a local clinic or do selftest at a public hospital/health center. Latter one is free.

Diastolic 51 in combination sounds extreme.

Misc possible causes.

Do you take other medications?

Are you dehydrated? (not drink enough)

Worst case is heart problems (valve)?

What's your pulse after resting?

Have gone for another and it was 139/55, pulse rate 71. A touch better.

As I said, if you're 75 you're happy with 140-150. Some exercises can help. I do Tai chi every morning.

Good luck

If correct, this is 100mmHg difference between systolic and diastolic. This is called thr pulse pressure and this value is abnormal. The OP needs to get this checked out asap.

It is well for me but poor old Fred O'B  sadly passed on back in January 2024. He went the way that I would like to go. He went to sleep one night and never woke up. I went to his cremation.

To use an old East Anglian expression. He were a good old boy.

BTW his wife made terrible coffee.

Let's move on to a different scenario. I will get an injection in one of my eyes (in which I lose sight). My wife is worried about me losing my sight in the other eye after the injection, and I will use my wheelchair, which I have never used. So is that necessary? Can or will you lose sight in the author's eye

Thanks Sheryl, 18 months ago I took your recommendation for St Louis, which took me on to Chula (same doc), I could now do with a general check up for a short list of things beside the above. As Chula have all my info they look the logical place to start, but their admin procedures are at best an irritant plus the inevitable hanging about. Being old is a right pain.

Chula has a specialized heart center if needed  https://kcmh.chulalongkornhospital.go.th/en/ec/the-cardiac-center-en/

Does the above reading mean I need to speak to a doctor sharpish.?

Healthyish diet, old git now, no alcohol for over 1 year, non smoker, not overweight, had chemo and radiation 1 year ago, tumour gone

Any advice welcome.

Yes go and see a doctor as 150 is too high and 50 is much too low, organs can be damaged due to lack of adequate blood supply,  you need to have your medication changed or adjusted.

I was 152/70 six weeks ago and have been in touch with a doctor here in the UK who I give my readings to.

My medication was changed and I went down to 142/65, still too high as the doc wants me to get down to the 130's, I am 69 and so that is regarded as OK.

I am due another chat with the doctor in two weeks time.

Take your readings in the morning and evening.

Sit down for ten minutes and read the news or something, then take the reading, wait five minutes and take it again.

Over seven days you should add up all of the readings and get the average.

Do not take the readings if you have eaten in the last hour.

But see a doctor, we can't take our money with us when we go.

Good luck and do something about it.👍

I read your post and the replies to gain some more knowledge myself, from others experiences who have had similar symptoms. I skimmed past the cynical ones.

But in general you got sound advice ie have a check up with a Cardiologist.

I just want to share a bit of information I read recently from research done in North America on high blood pressure.

Participants wore a smart watch at bedtime to monitor their blood pressure during the night.

The results showed that those who did not drink alcohol had a “ normal “ blood pressure reading.

But those who drank alcohol had an increased blood pressure.

Of course there may be other considerations/ factors apart from this study, eg genetics ; anti hypertensives ; diet ; etc etc

One other consideration that springs to mind is that I would try taking my blood pressure twice a day. First, upon waking, and then last thing at night.

For a week maybe, just to see if there are any variations between rest and activity.

No idea

I do know if visiting the Hospital if the reading is 165 or over then a porter is called and you have to lay on the bed for 1 hour with constant BP checks

Many years ago my then Dr said take the BP 3 times with 5 mins between each for correct reading...

I keep a daily chart on my PC, so could go back 17 years..........  BP this morning 140/64 -- so last month July  Lowest was 102/53 the highest 189/101  - mostly 120 - 130 over 60 -70

Every Tuesday the Nurse home visit  = a BP check this past Tuesday was 127/62

Have Hypertension for 33 years

As for alcohol  do not drink so never been a factor.
