Wise card spending

Featured Replies

I just had a look at the Wise site , but can`t find any info. about spending limits using the card via chip + pin or contactless . I`ve used contactless in the UK for a £ 75 purchase which went through ok . Will contactless work in say , big C Thailand , and is there a limit ?

Can see it in the app.

At the bottom you have a tab called "Cards" after you get a menu.

One of the items is called limits....

The default total maximum daily and monthly spending limit across all of your Wise cards is €30,000 or the Thai Baht equivalent. You can lower this limit in the settings for any of your cards, and the change will apply to all of them.

Contactless payments work at Big C, Foodland, Villa, 7-Eleven, and almost all major supermarkets and department stores. Based on my experience, contactless works at around 70 to 80 percent of places in Thailand that accept credit cards.

Most stores don’t seem to have any upper spending limits for card purchases, but some require a minimum purchase of ฿100 or ฿200 to use a card. Others have no minimum at all.

Also can use in Lotus, not Makro

Correct, Makro only accepts cash or direct bank payments via QR code.

In many petrol stations, like Texaco, attendants walk around with a wireless card payment device that also accepts contactless card payments.

If you have an Apple Watch, you can also add your Wise card to the Apple Wallet on your watch and then simply tap your watch on the contactless card reader at the station. Don't even need to pull your card out to make payment. It works like a charm.

I go to PTT you have to go to the kiosk to pay QR code so I've never bothered, maybe cars are different

It's because they are too lazy to walk to the kiosk, return with the device, then return it to the kiosk

I have experienced the same at PTT stations occasionally, I mostly fill up at the Bangchak staion Sukumvith Pattaya klang, and each pump staff has the device always with them

Makro accepts UOB card only, no other Thai bank cards accepted either

Better make sure I don`t lose my card then !

Not sure. I think every petrol station is different and some are using more recent card payment devices than others. Try going to a Texaco station and see what happens. The other thing is some petrol stations have a 300 Baht minimum to be able to use a card for payment, so could also be the issue at PTT if your payments are under 200-300 baht.

I keep my two physical Wise cards frozen in the Wise app at all times to prevent unauthorized use in case I lose them. I only temporarily unfreeze them when I need to make a purchase, which is rare. So if I lose the cards they can't be used by anyone else.

Instead, I primarily use digital Wise cards that I have created in the Wise app. You can have up to three active digital Wise cards at a time, and they can be deleted and replaced as needed in the app, something I do periodically for security.

I also configure each digital card to be enabled only for mobile wallets using the Card Controls settings in the app. Once configured, I add the digital card to my Apple Wallet and use my iPhone or Apple Watch to make all payments via a contactless tap. I rarely need the physical card, except in the unlikely event that a vendor’s contactless reader fails.

This setup is highly secure. Even if the digital card number is compromised, it can only be used through a mobile wallet for payments the way I have setup the card in the app. Additionally, no one else can add your Wise digital card to another mobile wallet, offering strong protection against unauthorized use.

Excellent system . I only have an Android phone so cant` use a digital wallet . I might try to manage risk by keeping most of the funds in the Wise deposit ( interest bearing ) section , and only transfer small amounts as required into the balance from which the card payments are taken .

On an Android phone, you can add a Wise digital debit card to either Google Pay or Samsung Wallet if you have a Samsung device. Both options work the same way for contactless payments, just like Apple Wallet.

Yes, I also do what you mentioned. I keep the bulk of my funds in my Wise account stored in what they call Jars. Money kept in Jars cannot be spent using any of the cards. The funds must first be moved from the Jars to your account balances before they can be used. I use this as a security measure to protect the majority of the funds in my Wise account. I usually never keep more than the equivalent of US$1,000 in any of my Wise balances to limit potential losses in case of card fraud. The way I have my cards set up, the risk of fraud is already very low, but I use this as an extra layer of protection.
