Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani has come under the spotlight after initially announcing a suspension of services for new Cambodian patients due to tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border. Following public outcry over potential breaches of medical ethics, the hospital has now clarified its stance, assuring continued care based on humanitarian principles.

The hospital's initial memo indicated that services for new Cambodian patients would be suspended and Cambodian translators withdrawn. Cambodian patients already admitted were to be placed under strict zoning from today until 10 August.

However, in a statement today, Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital has reassured that current patients will continue receiving treatment. New patients, particularly in emergency situations, will also be welcomed, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to humanitarian care.

A significant backlog has emerged due to the suspension of proxy medication collections, a consequence of cross-border drug delivery restrictions. Despite this challenge, the hospital is managing ongoing treatments to ensure patient safety.

Adjustments have been made to non-urgent services, suspending after-hours specialist clinics and postponing non-emergency surgeries. These changes are part of broader resource management efforts, aimed at maintaining safe operations amidst regional instability.

The hospital cited a decreased number of Cambodian patients as the reason for suspending interpreter services, clarifying that initial communication on the measures was misunderstood.

In financial terms, this matter has wider implications. Medical services impacted may affect regional economies, with anticipated costs for Cambodians seeking alternative care in Thailand estimated at hundreds of Thai Baht per visit.

The hospital remains committed to safeguarding all patients, staff, and surrounding areas, urging patience and understanding as they adapt to the current circumstances.

This development highlights the delicate balance between operational adjustments due to regional tensions and upholding global humanitarian values.
