I am not defending the man, but some of the assumptions and comments made defy common sense. The fact is that very few if any of Thailand's wealthy are contributing anything. He gave something. Yes, it is nice PR and it comes at a time when he has had some bad media, particularly with the previous  PM's  embarrassment with the leaked recording. And yes, it makes for a nice distraction. Now people will say, what a fine patriot he is, rather than how could he have allowed the mess with Cambodia.

That is a western concept that comes from the Judeo-Christian teachings in both the Old and New testaments of the  bible. That is not how Thais do it. Very few donations are done discreetly. They want everyyone to see their making merit. In this case, aside from the PR, another reason why  some donations are publicized is to encourage others to donate.  Although, the man is not particularly honest, I don't know if this is dirty money, as he did make much of his fortune from the sale of AIS and the investment of that sum.

As per my first comment, most of his money goes back to AIS.

Unless you are in the top 30% of Thai taxpayers, it is highly unlikely that your taxes cover  the benefits that you receive, no matter their quality. One of the weaknesses of your comment is that it does not take into account the incremental cost of infrastructure such as roads, healthcare, protective services etc.

Yes, he pays taxes. The past  military regimes and their successor administrations, audited him closely. If they could have found something, anything, they would have used it against him.  Don't forget the audits they put him through.
