In an unfolding tragedy that has gripped the attention of two nations, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is urging respect and restraint following the death of a Filipina woman in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lourdes Morin, 75, originally from Victorias City, Negros Occidental, was reported missing on 27th July. Her family sounded the alarm after she failed to return from attending Mass at St. Viator Church near Flamingo. Just three days later, hikers stumbled upon her decomposing body in a ravine, about 10 kilometres from her last known location.

As authorities delve into the circumstances of Morin's death, the DFA calls for public patience and discretion. The department is currently awaiting detailed information from the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles. Until further details are confirmed, the agency stressed the importance of respecting the family's privacy and refraining from speculative narratives.

Arriving in Las Vegas in May, Morin, a green-card holder, was visiting her daughter and grandchildren with plans to return to the Philippines in January. The discovery of her body has left both family and friends seeking answers to the lingering questions surrounding her unexplained disappearance and death.

While local law enforcement investigates whether foul play played a role, the DFA’s appeal highlights the delicate nature of such international incidents. With the investigation ongoing, the global Filipino community watches with concern, hoping for clarity and justice.

The DFA's statement serves as a reminder of the sensitivity required in discussing tragic events, urging the media and the public to honour the family’s need for space and support during this devastating time.

As updates emerge, the DFA and local authorities in the United States continue to work closely, ensuring all developments are communicated responsibly. For now, the focus remains on unraveling the mystery of Lourdes Morin’s tragic and untimely death.

It's not often you find a grandmother dead in a ravine 10 miles from her last known point of contact.
