Police in Chiang Rai have detained 18 Chinese nationals who allegedly entered Thailand illegally from Myanmar.

Officers from Muang Chiang Rai Police Station received a report from staff at a local convenience store that a group of suspicious men had been loitering outside the premises for an extended period.

When officers arrived, they found 18 men who were unable to communicate in Thai. A check for passports, visas and other identification documents revealed that none could produce any valid paperwork. Police later discovered that the group had been staying at a resort in Tha Sai subdistrict, Muang Chiang Rai.

Initial questioning revealed that they had crossed into Thailand from Myanmar without passing through an official immigration checkpoint or authorised border crossing.

The men were taken to the 191 Patrol Operations Centre at Muang Chiang Rai Police Station, where they were formally arrested, informed of the charges and their legal rights, and later handed over to investigators for prosecution under immigration law.
