Cheaper eggs under Trump... and the irony

Featured Replies

The MAGA boys on this forum like to brag about Trump keeping his campaign promise, and lowered the price of eggs.

And then comes the irony.

He put a 50% tariff on those eggs :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Brazil egg exports to US spike after bird flu, ahead of tariff

SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Brazilian total egg exports, including fresh and processed products, rose almost 305% to 5,259 metric tons in July, reflecting strong demand from the United States after its bird flu outbreak, according to data compiled by industry group ABPA on Monday.

The U.S. turned to Brazil after bird flu reduced domestic egg supplies, raising prices and inflation. However, President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, including eggs, on August 6.

In the first seven months of 2025, the U.S. was the main destination for Brazilian egg exports, with 18,976 tons shipped there in the period, representing a 1,419% rise and almost $41 million in sales, ABPA said.

Yes, the price of eggs has gone down in the US.

But now industrial produce is going through the roof.  For clarity, I'm calling it industrial to denote big-time agro-biz as opposed to family farms, orchards, etc, like these guys

The egg shortage was a booster for the small, organic egg farms -- as the industrial egg prices went up the cost of the organic family-farm product became competitive.

Between record heat waves and no one there to harvest the fields the future does not look promising: iceberg lettuce was over $4 a few weeks ago.  Expect the retail price of quality coffee in the US to go above US$30/pound (it's around $20 now).

Inflation rises by most in six months, stoking tariff-driven price concerns

Inflation ticked higher in July, according to new government data released Tuesday as investors stay alert to how much President Trump’s tariffs are starting to affect consumer costs.

The latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that "core" inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 3.1% over the past year in July, ahead of June's 2.9% increase and an indication that rising goods inflation is no longer being offset by easing services inflation.

Monthly core prices increased 0.3%, also surpassing the prior month's 0.2% uptick and marking the largest gain in six months. Heading into the report, economists had expected core CPI to rise 3.0% year over year and 0.3% month over month.
