Bangkok, Thailand - A storm of protest has erupted following the proposed sale of the Netherlands embassy compound in Bangkok. The Dutch Association in Thailand has rallied to stop the move, delivering a petition to halt the sale of this historically significant site on Wireless Road.

 

On July 30, prominent members of the Dutch, Thai, and expatriate communities gathered to present a letter to the Dutch Ambassador, Remco van Wijngaarden, expressing widespread opposition. The association, having gathered over 1,000 signatures, is firmly opposing local developers who are interested in the prime property.

 

Receiving the letter from Dutch Association Chairman Willem Pentermann, Ambassador van Wijngaarden stated, "I am thrilled to listen to you today. It is a fundamental right in every democracy to approach the authorities with your wishes."

 

The strategic and historical importance of the property is the primary source of concern over the potential sale. The compound not only houses a heritage villa acknowledged by the Association of Siamese Architects but also enjoys historical ties with the Thai Royal Family. Positioned in an area with rising land values, the property holds immense strategic potential.

 

"We’re looking at serious long-term repercussions if the property is sold now," warned Mr. Pentermann. "Beyond heritage, it's about the future and strategic planning."

 

The association urges the Dutch government to undertake a transparent economic assessment before proceeding. They suggest exploring alternative financial avenues, such as using the land as collateral, to avoid hasty decisions, reported the Bangkok Post.

 

"We hope to avoid the UK's misstep of selling its historic Wireless Road compound, a decision that received strong backlash," Mr Pentermann noted.

 

He emphasised that the compound is more than a diplomatic site; it embodies the rich relationship between the Netherlands and Thailand. The decision on its fate should mirror its cultural and diplomatic significance.
