Police in Nonthaburi raided an upmarket housing estate in the early hours of the morning, arresting 29 people caught playing the illegal card game Kao Kaew.

The raid, which took place at around 01.30 on 17 August, was led by Pol Col Somchai Jangthamma, superintendent of Bang Srimuang Police Station. Officers swooped on a private residence in the Tha It area of Sai Ma subdistrict, Mueang district, following intelligence provided by an informant.

All those present were detained, comprising three identified as bankers and 26 players. Seized at the scene were six packs of cards, 4,900 baht in cash, mobile phones, CCTV equipment, e-cigarettes and a variety of gambling paraphernalia.

Pol Col Somchai explained that the group did not operate a permanent gambling den but instead met periodically by arrangement, with participants drawn mostly from Nonthaburi and neighbouring Thonburi.

Charges of illegal gambling have been filed against all 29 suspects. Bail was set at 30,000 baht for each banker and 10,000 baht for each player.

Authorities stressed that crackdowns on illicit gambling will continue, particularly in residential areas where residents have voiced concerns about security and disturbance.
